Accepted an offer from Nvidia for a design internship a few months ago for 44/hr + 6,600 housing stipend. The company seems cool but the team I'm on doesn't seem like the most exciting work from a design standpoint. Recently also received a roblox design internship offer for 58/hr + housing stipend (not sure exact amount, around or more than nvidia). Obviously roblox is a much higher pay but I've heard their return offer rate is rather low. Wanted to ask everyone's opinion on future prospects at each company. This is my last summer so I really want an internship that will convert to a fulltime opportunity. I don't care as much about the internship experience, but more about converting to fulltime + career growth in the future. If anyone has any insights that would be greatly appreciated! #nvidia #roblox #internship #design #career
Money and Resume. Their stock, your RSUs, have a greater chance of being much greater than Roblox. Also if you end up disliking Nvidia having that name on your resume will help you more than Roblox on landing interviews.
Gotcha, why do you think Nvidia has much more clout on a resume for product design than Roblox? I was concerned on this point since Nvidia is mostly known for their hardware, and was worried that would not be a good place to grow my career/resume in design because of that.
I just think Nvidia has more clout regardless of your role at the company because of what Nvidia does and what they will do in the coming years. Also clout aside, one thing new grads tend to overlook is the company roadmap and what that future could look like. I bet most people on this thread would agree Nvidias future looks a hell of a lot brighter than Roblox. (Zooms also)
I’d be embarrassed to have Roblox on my CV. Roblox looks like a project that got second place at my high-school’s art competition
Food for thought: If you intern at Nvidia for longer than 3 months, you’re eligible for ESPP as an intern
Personally i would say Roblox is better brand but chances of full time offer are low due to increased hiring bar. I will recommend Nvdia
Nvidia has a much better reputation. Def Nvidia
Very different companies. NVidia has been around forever and is in a mature stage and in the chips space. Roblox is nascent and in the Generative AI, 3D, Gaming, Metaverse, is aging up, and more greenfield tech. Check out "RDC" for the recent roadmap shipped. We take higher risks and encourage an innovation mindset, on average (though it will depend on team joined). Besides conversion to full time, I bet you would work on very different projects there. Your early career experiences beget similar opportunities in your later career. So the projects and their product spaces matter a lot early on. Choose your design problem of choice. I understand also the temptation to seek establishment through prestige, but at the end of the day when you interview with any high level company, it comes down to what you worked on. Every company from OpenAI to Roblox to Nvidia to Meta so on will be willing to hire candidates from unknown startup backgrounds if they worked on valuable, difficult problems. Avoid the prestige trap. Your journey matters. That said, the incoming class has a high bar and the economy right now is brutal towards early career people. So that is something to weigh.
The point of an internship is: 1. Confirm that type of work is what you want to do with your career, and 2. Get a job offer from the company Nvidia is the clear choice when compared against Roblox. Congratulations on two great offers though!
Thanks! Would love to hear your thoughts on why Nvidia is the clear choice to you?
