Nvidia Vs Qualcomm

How would you compare R&D in these two places. How would they compare with respect to compensation. Qcom location: San Diego, NVIDIA location: Santa Clara. Is it true that Nvidia do not offer relocation bonus. PhD + 2.5 YOE. Both positions are in AI-ML software/hardware. Thanks!

Save yourself some pain - post TC (yourself and five random relatives, spouse included).

My ex husband worked at nvidia and they don’t offer anything they don’t have to. Employees are lucky they offer toilet paper in the restrooms.

Not fully true. Nvidia’s health plan is amazing. It covers a lot of things you can never imagine of.

Nvidia pddg Jan 14, 2019

Nvidia’s health plan is good but I wouldn’t call it amazing.

In general there are more opportunities In SF Bay Area in your field, than in San Diego. However, the cost of living here is very high! Also, there is a difference between paying for relocation and a relocation bonus. NVIDIA doesn’t give bonuses but they give lots of RSUs and they pay for relocation. Post TC for each company so we can be more helpful.

Nvidia doesn't give lots of RSUs. Speaking from experience 😁

Nvidia pddg Jan 14, 2019

😂 😂 ‘lots of RSUs’

Anecdata—every ex Nvidia engineer I’ve worked with has been excellent and every ex Qualcomm engineer I’ve worked with has been garbage. Therefore, Nvidia.

This is AI - ML and you still have a doubt that it should be Nvidia?

Nvidia monolith Jan 14, 2019

As he/she said it is sw/hw . The chip might be the same but the programming and assembly for applications are different. Similarly when it comes to learning with NVDAs stack on deep learning etc it might just be better than QC and also the brand value when it comes to your resume. I do believe ML/AI at Nvda would be better than QC.

If you are young and want to learn, come to NVIDIA . They don’t give much comp, but your career will be in a better shape in a few years. Also, COL in Bay Area has gone from bad to worse so expect to move after some time.

Qualcomm GtSk70 Jan 14, 2019

I have worked in several companies including Qualcomm. In this case, it appears that you should go with Nvidia. Seems like a no brainier. Qualcomm is great if you are interested in wireless communication or want to live in San Diego. But you have many options in the Bay area which bolsters the case for Nvidia.

Intel (⌐■_■) Jan 14, 2019

Just go to Nvidia. Not even a question. People from Qualcomm have been jumping ship to Intel, that's how messed up their Apple fight has been. San Diego is nice to live compared to the Bay, but if you are single with no kids, opt for the higher growth but sucky living standard area.

Nvidia without a doubt. I am ex-Qcom

They give you a relocation package, but they won’t give you cash in its place (ie no total lump sum option, though parts of it are paid out as lump sums, so if you don’t use the movers you don’t get extra cash)
