I have a new grad offer from Nvidia and Amazon and wanted opinions based on current economic situations (layoffs etc.), career progression, and WLB. Nvidia IC2 (Intern conversion) TC: 238k Mostly writing functional simulators of next-gen architectures. Amazon L4 TC: 232k Compiler engineer for AWS GPU pipelines My opinion: The work at Amazon is more interesting and has a better career (I can switch to Google/Nvidia/Apple/etc. in the DL space) but I've heard horror stories about the WLB and PIPs. Nvidia has a more laid-back work culture, but the work isn't much interesting. Not sure about career progression here either. Current TC: 🥜 #nvidia #amazon #newgrad
No brainer: Nvidia. Early on in your career you don't want to be in a place which may make you hate the industry. Also, Amazon just announced 10k layoff target and on the plus side, govt. recently announced support for chipmakers in US. So, I think you would be relatively safe at NVIDIA.
NVIDIA, that's all what I have to say
🏃♂️ from Pipzon
+1 for Nvidia
If you really want to join Google and Apple in DL space, try it now because none of simulator or compiler are DL. I think both functional simulator and compiler are more interesting job than DL. And both of them requires many years practice to become an good engineer. But I doubt how much you can learn in a chaotic environment like Amazon with so high turnover rate.
The compilers team works on compiling DL kernels. I'll be on the front-end optimizations, which means a lot of working with DL backends. When I applied for jobs, there were no new grad roles in Google/Apple related to DL backend optimization/implementation.
If I were you, I would try more positions that are direct in your target job scope. Compiler front end opt is still compiler work even it is a DL compiler. And as a fresh graduate, you also have more choices.
Nvidia, congrats OP
If you are into compiler and enjoy system/low level engineering and optimization, Amazon would be a better choice. if you are into architectural level modeling and simulation, then Nvidia is better.
did you mean the other way? the former for nvidia and the latter for amazon?
Choose Nvidia for high job security in these crazy layoffs time.
NVIDIA has astronomically better job security, especially in this economy. Plus being converted from an internship might help expedite early career growth/promotions.
How with the work you like. But know that NVIDIA employees tend to stay whereas amazing is a churn and burn op (at least that’s what I’ve been told).
