OCI vs Okta

I have an offer from both OCI and Okta with same TC. Please help me evaluate OCI: I think has a good future and the tech excites me but I may be lost in the big company and politics Base 115k + rsu 25k Ic2 Update: OCI doubled my rsus. Base 115k + rsu50k Okta: I like the hiring manager and the culture seemed more chill. But the tech and space may put me in the IAM box. Base 100k + rsu 40k Swe2 TC: 140K (new grad) Location: remote #oci #okta

Interview more…

Okta - no question.

Okta tacoBurps Dec 2, 2021

Just my two cents: Working at Okta won’t put you in an “IAM” box. Identity is very cross functional and I’ve had new grads on my team learn and develop a lot building services that are operate securely at scale. OCI is all right but your fears about being lost in a big company might be true. If you do want to join a larger company I’d say keep interviewing. Amazon is throwing crazy offers everyone’s way at the moment. If you want to join a mid sized growth company Okta is excellent for that. Also try negotiating for more RSUs

Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. Do u think if I can get more rsus at OCI, it will be worth it. Love your username :-)

Okta tacoBurps Dec 2, 2021

You have some leverage now. You can use either offer to negotiate more RSUs

I’m at OCI now and jumping ship. Don’t come here, there’s toxic management and politics. Management put engineers under the grindstone for their own mistakes of overpromising to clients.

Asurion ilakatha Dec 2, 2021

That’s very obvious but looks like op has decided to go for OCI.

Oracle sfvblogdx Dec 3, 2021

How is that obvious lol?

Oracle sfvblogdx Dec 2, 2021

I’d say okta. More feature work, iaas companies are Ops hell and are not worth staying for more than two years

Okta

OCI should name themselves EvilCorp, long way from the sparta days which started with some positive intent. Do make your own judgement ... but I would choose anyone but OCI. It's that BAD. Personally, it was the worst decision to have worked @OCI. The most toxic culture ever seen in my 21+ years, so far. Ellison is bitter at losing the cloud business, always jeering at AWS at the conferences he hosts. With Ellison at the helm, he has an evil twin in OCI. (Do your own search, look up on google "oracle insider culture of fear" and you will understand why). Ashley Stewart @ business insider has done a very good job on exposing Oracle's toxic culture. With that said, it does pay to be evil, for some. Not for me. But you could quickly climb the ranks if your conscience allows. Example? On LinkedIn, lookup the current VP of compliance, name starts with a K. She cannot even demonstrate a deep understanding of their (OCIs) own compliance, PCI, SOC2 or FedRamp, and has mis-stated facts many times (in front of other VPs and external auditors!!!) but she's a friend of the evil twin. Same goes with the many others in their database, network, security teams. Senior management's thinking is to promote "agreeable" people at the top. To the outside world, their HR claims they promote quickly (many allegedly competent and junior people were made VPs from 2016-2019 from ICs), but behind the scenes these "leaders" know to never complain about the head & senior management at OCI, or else they get replaced. So they don't and for those that do complain, (check out Glassdoor as well), they are 'managed' out, with an RSU/Promotion reward for the person doing the dirty work. So that the proverbial "S" doesn't hit the fan and the other job seekers don't get to see the inside.

Sometimes it’s not about TC buddy, if that what you want - obvious answer is OCI.

Thanks! I agree with you.

Okta fha86hd Dec 3, 2021

Think long term. Going to OCI will make you an oracle engineer. Going to Okta will make you a engineer that worked for a high growth saas company. Oracle doesn’t have a good reputation anymore. Okta does. Don’t optimize for money so early in your career.

Oracle sfvblogdx Dec 3, 2021

Aight imma call bs on this. While I do recommend okta, don’t do it for a reason as immature as this

Oracle sfvblogdx Dec 3, 2021

I’ve worked at oci for 2 years and have never used anything proprietary to oracle except the oracle db

Oracle XGBE58 Dec 8, 2021

Oci will unconsciously make you database expert and okta will make you security expert, decide what you want to achieve and focus on in your career. OCI culture is toxic as hell.
