What is the reputation of Oakland in the Bay Area as a place to live and commute to work? Been hearing a lot of coworkers moving to Lake Merritt neighborhood in Oakland lately, wondering which are the best neighborhoods for renting? #oakland #bayarea
So Oakland can be “cool”! However, I work in downtown near Lake Merritt and it’s quite dangerous at night. Lots of people get robbed and assaulted. As a girl, I would not live there, but might be OK for a guy.
East Oakland is still affordable.
I live near Lake Merritt. The commute to SF is pretty easy on Bart in the morning, it is scary at night. We have walked by a lady that was just mugged/robbed at around 9pm. My partner and I are planning to move to SF when I get a job. Also, can anyone help a guy get an iOS developer role in SF? :)
Hmm I see. So definitely an agreement there to stay indoors at night Make a thread asking for referrals!
It’s really not that bad of a place though! We have loved living here, but most of our friends are in SF. There are a lot of new apartments going up. We just got a flyer about a complex offering 2 free months of rent that’s in a good area. I can dig that up if you’re interested
Uptown Oakland is awesome. Same for Jack London square. Downtown Oakland is fine, but live on Broadway or blocks west of it. There are few other upscale neighborhoods as well, but too far from BART.
Emeryville, areas near Ashby and Rockridge BARTs are safe and nice
Bad - it’s high crime
Oakland is still high crime, but so is SF so meh
I live in East Oakland and it's been fine for the 1.5 yrs so far. I also lived near Lake Merritt, which was safe and was close to a ton of things. You hear about robberies and break-ins, every now and then, but can happen anywhere in the Bay Area these days. Don't listen to all the Indians here. Many of them have never even set foot in Oakland, but have a ton of opinions to offer.
Sounds so true, everyone on Blind is freaking out if the crime rate is higher than Palo Alto's or Los Gato's
If you’re working in SF or along BART corridor then why not live in OAK?
Emeryville
Will you need a car to get to work in Oakland or SF from there though?
I haven’t tried it, but there’s a nonstop bus from the cluster of new apartments (Public Market) to Salesforce Transit Center in SF. There is also a free Emery Go Round shuttle to BART. Your own car is the most convenient option, but depending on where in Oakland or SF you’re going to, public transport could be workable.
