I'm trying to make a tough decision picking between Bloomberg vs Amazon (both NYC) Bloomberg (senior Software engineer): TC 210k Amazon (SDE 2): 160 base, 60/55k signing, 60 stock (220 TC) Bloomberg team is for their trading platform Amazon team is in the ads org Both have their Pros and cons Bloomberg with better WLB and growth into hedge funds Amazon having more diverse problems and growth into Google FB etc Which company would be better to join at this current moment? Would also like to get thoughts and opinions in the comments Current TC: 110 YOE: 2 EDIT: July 7 2021 Following up on this a year later, I had picked Amazon and have had a pretty great experience. Your mileage may vary team by team but go with the choice which will give you the most growth #bloomberg #amazon #offer #tech
Same location?
Yes both in NYC
I think it's a close call and really depends on which career path you wanna pursue in future.
Could you share your interview experience at Bloomberg? I have an interview scheduled
When is yours and location?
You really can’t go too wrong. If you’re looking for more WLB or you want to do finance or trading then the obv choice is Bloomberg. If you want to work at tech companies or FAANG and more ambitious then maybe go Amazon.
Depends on the team/org. There are some engineering teams on Amazon that are straight 40 and lax.
V rare
Both are recession proof, well known brand names that will get you interviews anywhere. At Bloomberg your clients will be literally everyone- big banks, large institutions, start ups. Amazon has a more holistic ecosystem and economy of scale that nobody touches and they’re so ubiquitous that you’ll also have no issues getting an interview. Depends what matters more to you. Comp (Amazon) vs WLB (BB)
210k is bottom of the barrel for SDE2 in NYC, you should negotiate for higher tc. You can negotiate up to ~280k
OP has 2 YOE experience though that's probably the reason why they got bottom of barrel offer
#feelsbadman 5 yoe 170k TC here :(
Keep playing them off each other in negotiation, then take Bloomberg for the better people valuation culture.
Would go with BB. Hedge funds, Google, and FB hire from BB a lot.
Maybe hedge funds but Google and FB hire way more Amazonians.
Do HFs really hire from Bloomberg a lot?
Amazon sucks but their ads team there tends to have a higher bar then the others in NY and the experience there will prime you for move into better tech companies. Bloomberg is great but it could lock you into financial. Suck it up for two years at Amazon and then head out.
FWIW I've heard Bloomberg really takes care of its people.
This is true. One of Bloomberg managers responsibilities is to make sure developers are happy.
Is it a different story at Amazon? This is the manager responsibility regardless of the company. It is a biggest part of being a manager, care about people and grow them.
