Bloomberg: 158k base | 17k bonus | 10k relocation | no stock or sign on | New York Roblox: 150k base | 88k stock (starts vesting immediately) | 22k sign on | 15k relocation | San Mateo yoe: 0 I don't know which team or org I'd be on for either, but both will let me rank team options after speaking to some managers. Appreciate any advice here as well. Obviously Roblox has better TC/benefits (I may try to negotiate Bloomberg up a bit) and possibly more interesting work/better tech stack (?), but Bloomberg is about as stable as you can get and New York is a plus for me. I am also very interested in company culture (strength of leadership and management, collaboration, wlb) and learning opportunities/growth (comp, responsibilities, tech, actionable feedback). I am also curious about Bloomberg's very flat structure v. Roblox's fine-grained levels and how that impacts day-to-day work.
This isn’t even a choice, Roblox all the way. Your n+1, n+2 levels are gonna have like a $200k difference in TC. You can live in NYC 3-5 years later when you’re being paid $350k+
This
At the 5 year later point and 350k point… moving to nyc is not so easy
I can’t believe new grads are getting offers 150k+
I got 250k at google. Competing offers help. HFTs pay 300-400k for new grads. There’s nothing wrong with it, companies are taking a bet on top young talent since they have the most potential to grow compared to jaded grumpy employees
Google L3 gave you 250 recently? Mind sharing breakdown?
Didn't roblox recently have their layoffs? Or was it just the Talent team?
Move to New York - the personal growth and joy you will get is worth more than the TC so early in your career. Work is work, but that’s only 8(ish) hours per day- where would you rather spend the other 16?
I would go roblox no question, and then try BBG or honestly better in a couple years.
While I have you here, what do you think of the two level structure at Bloomberg? Does it actually incentivize less experienced people to take on larger responsibility? Depress comp amongst more experienced engineers? What is the typical promotion timeline?
Don’t even think about comp if you’re coming here, unless you’re planning to be in top 5% in performers. Whatever negatives you’ve heard is probably true. Only thing is I don’t think tech stack or learning at BBG is bad at all, plenty of teams doing impressive work.
I would pick Roblox. There is a lot you will learn and you will grow faster here than most companies(especially compared to older bigger companies). Your priority should be to learn and grow as much as you can at this stage of your career. Because Roblox has more male engineers than female engineers shouldn’t deter you from your decision. Remember, the loudest voices are not the majority.
Some blind users are ridiculously pessimistic tbh. Roblox is kinda dysfunctional in some orgs, but overall people are nice, most team members are competent (though often leadership are not), and the general dysfunction and the sheer number of unsolved problems mean there is a lot of scope you can take on if you’re up for it. The money is solid too obviously, outside of trading firms I don’t think anyone outpays us. And at least so far, my experience has been that taking on large scope early here is rewarded (not linearly, but well enough that it feels mostly fair to me). Aside from one isolated instance with an asshole who’s just interested in playing politics, I’ve never been made to feel that I can’t have a major contribution because of my level. I joined as a new grad fairly recently and I’m pretty happy here.
Just joined so I'll do my best - you will hear a lot of people dismiss Bloomberg because of old tech but It's a bit lazy and probably just reiterating what they hear online. If you work on a terminal application then you will use some proprietary and old tech, but there are a vast amount of teams that use modern tech. Just got out of training and got placed on a team that uses all open source software, there were a fair amount of teams in the "job fair" that were like this. They invest a lot in new joiners, though the expectation is that you stay there for a long time. Obviously they can't stop you from leaving though. WLB wise it's very good. Can't speak on progression cause I just joined, but in terms of location it's unbeatable. Also it seems like it's a near 0 percent chance of being laid off due to market conditions. Location is also a huge plus, even though Roblox pay is much higher I highly doubt San Mateo will be as fun as NYC. Other than that can't speak about Roblox.
lowkey pick roblox bro the TC is much higher and u gotta wait hella to get promoted at bloomberg. NYC seems fun at first but after a while the novelty wears off. If you are looking to jump ship asap id to bloomberg cuz WLB is good but id grind outside of work. Roblox i heard from other interns is toxic and not the best WLB.
Roblox is awesome, pays top of market, hires good talent and is very well run. Bloomberg is old school tech (think Cisco), pays don’t scale very high. It’s really NYC vs +80k
It’s definitely NOT well run.
Roblox can you elaborate on what you like or dislike about it? Would you recommend it to someone in my position?
