Offer Evaluation - DoorDash vs Microsoft
Currently at Amazon and have two different offers. One is to return to Microsoft and another to DoorDash. Doordash: TC 275K (Team undisclosed) - NYC Microsoft: TC 190K (Microsoft AI) - Seattle Current TC: 175K CAD I am hearing bad things about culture at DoorDash but the Tc is good. Microsoft AI could also be lucrative. Thanks in advance. EDIT: Thanks everyone for the responses. If TC was the same, which one would you choose? I am early career so I am prioritizing learning at this time.
Nyc is very expensive and has state tax. So pay could be equal. Try to get more stock from msft. Refreshers are very poor
Hmmm not exactly, I did this calculation at https://smartasset.com/taxes/income-taxes and this is what I found: 275K in NY, assuming OP lives in Manhattan which has city taxes: $170K take home, after $63K federal, 15K state and 10K city taxes 275K in NY, assuming OP lives in New Jersey: $181K take home, after $63K federal and 15K state taxes 190K in Seattle: $141K take home after $35K in federal taxes OP's best choice is taking the DoorDash NY offer and living outside of Manhattan.

Given TC level of offers I assume your YoE is low. Being in a big company in a growing function is a lot more important than current TC. Companies like DoorDash that are still losing money can’t survive economic downturns and your equity portion of TC go with it

Dash stock is high right now so there may not be much room to grow there. I’d pick Microsoft

Having worked at both companies I would say Microsoft. Reason being I believe this is for E4 level (based on comp) I feel you learn more IC level stuff at Msft and you learn more of a sys design approach at places like Doordash/Amazon. Perhaps I would focus more on becoming a better IC first at earlier phases as the later part comes with experience anyway, so I would consider Msft purely based on my experience. Had the jump been insane in terms of TC, I would have opted for DD purely for TC but NYC state taxes plus living expenses dont make it a lucrative offer, it is like 15-20% better TC when you factor in these things. Try to move doordash to Seattle to save on taxes. They have a large hub there so I doubt they'd be heavily against it. Microsoft is more generous on promos but they happen so frequently they lose value. Doordash is generous on both starting offer and refreshers. I haven't worked at Microsoft but from what close friends tell me Doordash is much better career and job wise.
What is Microsoft AI? And tc diff of 85k is significant!
