During my interviews, hiring manager gave me his emailId to write to him if I have any questions.. Is it appropriate to write to him numbers recruiter mentioned and negotiate with the manager directly? Or It is not appropriate to negotiate with the manager directly ? I kind of wrote to him after that I never got a response and did not get a yes or a no after that from the recruiter Does it work against us ? Any tips how to take it forward
Negotiation should be done with the recruiter. If the recruiter is not unresponsive ask the hiring manager for help with the communication.
Tl;dr; recruiter. Some companies have separate comp teams that determine new hires comp packages. They do not involve HMs in the process. Also HMs do not know about initial RSUs at some places. They know about bases, bonus allocation for their teams, and refreshers, but not the stock in the initial packages.
Thank you for the responses: Recruiter says I need to get approval of the numbers ‘-Approval’ means from hiring manager or from finance dept ? - I asked for a higher level, given my experience, approval for higher level/title is given by HM? - if higher level is approved, can he offer higher numbers? - is the title decided based on the numbers offered and agreed( by the candidate) it is it vice versa ?
If recruiter didn’t say ‘yes’ nor ‘no’, does it mean no-offer; got initial numbers and after that negotiated for higher title ( didn’t get approval) ; asked for higher stock ... after that no response
During negotiations, company raised new round of funding, and hence they reduced number of stock, so I asked for higher stock base on previous round and so on..
You can keep asking to death but they will only do anything if they really want you otherwise you have no leverage. All you can do is take it or leave it. They may come back in few weeks with better offer but they may not
Your hiring manager usually has no say on your comp atleast in bigger companies (unless he is a director). But doesn’t hurt to verbally talk to him about numbers. I wouldn’t do it on the email though!
