I was formally offered a non-union engineering position at Boeing Commercial. The initial offer of $109k, less than my current pay ($112k). Negotiated and got $114k. Im wondering if its worth the hassle to jump ship for such a small bump. Things like insurance gaps, longer commutes, loss of political capital at my current company, and needing to start fresh. Im not too crazy about the job, but it is a foot in the Boeing door. If I turn it down, would it burn my bridge with the company? Before anyone ask, this is in their customer support group in LA, so I cant imagine it would be affected by layoffs or stuff related to the MAX. But I am aware Boeing is notorious for layoffs.
Only person I know there is bored out of his mind at work, but likes that he has lots of energy at the end of the day to spend with his family.
Not worth it
The bump is small, but nobody takes a Major Salary bump at the lazy B. Boeing is a pretty good company to work for overall. Not much protections outside of a union though. Where you end up in Boeing has little to do with where you start. I know people who started as admins and are managers of major divisions. If you have ambition, you can go places in that company. If you have a good manager they can get you places. I know many people there. They’re either cooling their heels waiting for retirement, or moving up into E series in the next few years. One thing I like about the company is the community. People play in softball leagues, and many other club sports/activities and just overall have a life. That’s a good thing.
Benefits are key as well...if you need downtime and not work crazy hours and spend time with family, I’d take it.
My workload and benefits are comparable between the two companies.
YOE?
About 5 YOE
I would take the Boeing offer forsure then. At 5 YOE that’s probably a level 3 offer which is more than fair for the salary they offered.
The only thing is can say with con fidence is that the benefits are probably way better
That’s not too bad for the LA area, and as others have mentioned the benefits will be way better as it’s one of the areas Boeing shines in. I’d take it for the foot in the door at Boeing atleast and to get the name on your resume.
I’ll take boeing over panasonic for 10k less in salary. Panasonic benefits are incomparable, unless they revamped it in last 5 yrs. 114 is low for LA unless ur experience is ~5 yrs or so. If I want engineering work, I wouldn’t even look at seal beach... field rep, customer support, service, all those engineers are just titled engineers. You probably won’t do anything other than im or calling to get help from smes or ars.
Im about 5 YOE in commercial aviation, or 7 YOE if you count other types of customer support. The 401K benefits are about the same (Boeing matches $0.25 more than PAC up to 8%). PTO is 10/yr Boeing vs 15/yr PAC. If theres something I missed that Boeing offers let me know.
Boeing also offers one of the best tuition re-imbursement packages if you’re looking to get a masters or MBA in the future. Unlimited funding for any STEM masters and $25k/Yr. for a MBA
Not worth it. Trust me!
That is too small a jump to even think about. Changes in insurance copays, 401k vesting and even just vacation length differences could easily erase that tiny gain. If they don't have budget for you then they dont have budget for you. I would say if something more senior opens up let's talk. Else you are doing charitable work.
