Offers from Optum UHG and Medtronic

Hey guys, I am a junior software engineer with a little over a year of professional experience. I just got two offers for a software engineer position based out of Minnesota. I am trying to decide which offer to take. The offers are as follows: Optum UHG: base salary 72k + 10k sign-up bonus (non-negotiable). Medtronic: base salary 75k, no sign-up bonus (still negotiating). At Optum, it’s their Techonlogy Development Program (TDP) where you work for 6 months on one team (you don’t choose the first rotation) and then another 6 months on anoher team based on your preference. After that year, you get to choose what team you want for your final placement based on your interest and available openings. At Medtronic, It’s still an entry-level position but I’d be working on their careLink team which is basically a monitoring application that uses most of the modern frameworks (Dockers, AWS, Kafka, MySQL, etc.). I should preface by saying that I am very interested in using and learning more about AWS, cloud computing, microservices, and all this jazz. Based on your expeirnece, how should I decide which offer to accept? The reason why I am applying for new jobs is because my job doesn’t allow me to stay relevant to the advancements in the software industry. Most of my work is sadly just barebones development (makefiles and vi/vim). TC: 76k YOE: 1 Location: MN.

Go Optum! Their TDP program is great! You are more likely to use Azure there than AWS because Amazon will compete with UHG one day. Medtronic will be very dry experience especially with care-link. Medical devices dont pay well. Insurance is better industry. I started in Medical devices and now in Insurance. My salary wenr double in last 5 years.

Have you been through the TDP program at Optum? In what ways is it great?

I worked at Optum. Their TDP allows you to work on latest tech stack, and allow you to rotate on number of teams working on Cloud, Data Science, ML and others. Not sure which team you will land on but god exposure

Medtronic Medtronic Mar 19, 2020

Stay away from Medtronic. Too much red tape.
