Hi all, I’ve been through the initial phone call with a recruiter and the first coding round. They told me the next steps are more coding and architecture focused. This next call Okta is calling the “Deep Technical Architectural Interview” - any insight on what kind of problems or questions this would be about? I assume system design related, but more curious on the coding side. Thanks! TC: 100k YOE: 15 #interview #okta #swe
Ask for principal level. Title at Okta is inflated af.
Yes! OP based on your experience and skills see if you could push for Principal level. Check levels.fyi and compare it with your current level.
I need a referral for a role within Okta,
Staff at okta = senior everywhere else
I am staff at okta, staff is not a senior engineer. Staff’s responsibility ranges from implementation to lead project/team. For senior, they focus mostly on implementation/delivery. That said, some staff that operates like senior. But I know majority of staff don’t. I personally lead team/project. It all comes down to how good you are. Your 15 YOE can be principle for sure. But you are not alone with this experience as staff in okta
Sounds like senior lvl at a lot of other companies. So not sure what aspect you are referring to that is different. Implementation and delivery is mid level. Unless you are leading a full team of like 10 people.
How did it go? Did you get the job?
It was a discussion on how to design a fictional system and diagramming over a Miro board. I felt it went good overall. However, I got a final response from recruiter saying they were going with another candidate. Very conveniently timed couple days after they announced layoffs. 😅
May I know What is a fictional system?
About to have my next round with two devs discussing some projects, are you having the same interview workflow. For a senior role, after this round there will be a system design.
Are you interviewing for Staff role or senior?

What’s your YOE and relevant work experience. Either you are severely under paid now or aiming too high for Staff role with that TC
Edited the post, 15 YOE overall. I have a similar role currently but the company is very small (~30 total) so definitely underpaid, that’s part of why I’m looking to switch. It was my entry to the US market on TN visa so practically took what they offered 4 years ago and have gotten promotions from there.
Whatever you do, just don’t share the current TC with your recruiter, it would be disastrous and will lead to down leveling or getting passed on; if they ask what’s your comp expectation, leave it at you’re looking to get compensated at market.
