How do y’all feel about open office layouts? I’m working on one for the first time and I find it super distracting. Previously, I have shared an office with one co-worker and also worked from home, which came with its own set of challenges. Any suggestions for dealing with a hectic office while trying to concentrate? I already use noise-cancelling headphones.
I HATE open office floor plans. If you don't have a dedicated quiet space you can use, the headphones and visual barriers are the best you can do to minimize distractions.
It sucks. I suggest lobbying your manager for one day a week remote work. Once he approved that try to inch it up to two days a week. That’s the only solution.
Dumb AF. Especially when you have have uncivilized people working around you on mechanical keyboards and who have yet to learn how to eat without their mouths open.
Open floor plans doesn’t work. But none of the younger generations have ever experienced anything different so they don’t know better. As a seasoned manager in our industry it haunts me how we’re deliberately shooting ourselves in the foot by providing such inadequate working conditions.
For some tasks it doesn't bother me. For others it's extremely distracting. When I work on the latter, I'm usually WFH.
It doesn’t work. It’s distracting.
They are without question bout some bullshit
Startups do it because a) it's usually much cheaper than building offices and b) no one wants to appear 'old school'. Despise the BS about increased collaboration they are a diaster for concentration and velocity of work getting done.
Noise Cancelling headphones are great. If there's a place you can hide away from other people and focus on work, that worked really well for me. Our startup is located at a WeWork so it helps a lot for me to just find a private quiet area at times so that I can focus
