Opportunity Analogous to build M1 at Apple

I have an opportunity to join a major company that's not normally well regarded for something (that I'm an expert in) and basically help turn them into having an expertise in that area. It's vaguely similar to someone joining Apple 15 years ago to start custom silicon. I'm curious if anyone has done something similar within a niche or has any thoughts on obvious pros, cons, risks?
