Oracle Cloud “leadership”

I had my interview with OCI and got a verbal offer. Now when I look into the folks who interviewed me and the leadership - many of them are L6 equivalent folks with fancy titles as VP, SVP, Sr.Director! Wtf- someone L6 / maybe L7 in Amazon couple of years back - is a VP/SVP now and manage hundreds of people? Does Oracle Cloud make money?

The titles at oci seem inflated a bit to me, much like a bank has a million VPs. It doesn't necessarily mean they are doing what you think a VP should do, but they do have the title.

They created a new org which provides a role with greater responsibilities. It doesn’t matter it is profitable now or not. It is investment. That is not different from start ups. If you take a look at leadership in most big tech, there are lots of high ranking people with only a few years of experience because they were in expanding org (eg start up with growth) or got in via acquisition. If you envy those titles, move for easier opportunity. World does not give title and compensation based on your skill, IQ or how hard you work. Rather, it is about opportunity in a right moment if you have above average skills. Those VPs knew this and jumped early on (betting) and got those titles. If OCI takes off, they will move with good title to other companies as well. That is how the game has been played for a long time. It is not 60 hours of work per week that gets you there.

Agreed. Not sure those vps manage 100s though? Think those are just inflated titles that do the same stuff

My director has an org of ~50, and my Sr. director's is ~250. Not sure about the VP, but let's call it 1000. What's that map to other places?

Symantec Suр Sep 24, 2018

IC track is not that inflated there. Oracle IC-X = Google L(X+1) = Amazon L(X+2)

Oracle FlOdg Sep 24, 2018

Maybe we should make you a vp. You sound like a qualified candidate. How much do you want? Can you join tomorrow?

Do me a favor. Go look up Don Johnson’s LinkedIn profile and interviews with him at places like OpenWord and figure out how inspiring his experience and communication is vs other cloud leaders like Scott Guthrie or Werner Vogels (similar roles/positions). Then look up some of his lieutenants (SVPs). Go on, I’ll wait :) @HanDouble is right, they created a new org and took some risk - Zuck, Page, Jobs, etc weren’t born a CEO’s, but grew a company around them. However, cloud is now a big-boys game, with billions of dollars being spent and at stake, and I’d like some experience at the table there. The VP title there I believe is just a “M2/manager-of-managers” title, the same as Salesforce does, and many banks. As for making money - who knows. The fact that Oracle rearranged their quarterly accounting reporting buckets, are in a class action lawsuit around pushing/bundling cloud revenue against customer wishes, and Thomas Kurian “taking time off” after pushing to take PaaS/SaaS apps to other clouds, makes me kinda say no. Is Oracle just late to the cloud game and are now doing the right thing? Perhaps, but this article lays it out much better than I ever could... http://www.platformonomics.com/2018/05/follow-the-capex-separating-the-clowns-from-the-clouds/

He hired Eran F. from Google who is like the Mark Russinovich of Azure. Don is bringing in famous people to inspire others and draw away from Amazon and Microsoft.

Oracle could hire Lionel Messi but that still won’t make them a premiership soccer team.

I know someone at Amazon who left as a “Low L7” and was handed a VP title at OCI. An Amazon L8 should be making 1 - 1.5MM/year at OCI. You should ask for 2x your currency TC and expect to be pushed out in two years.
