Oracle Layoffs

SJ Mercury has an article about Oracle laying off 700 in SF Bay. Says HW and SW is the target. Wondering if there were any more specifics going around.. https://www.google.com/amp/www.mercurynews.com/2017/01/20/oracle-lays-off-450-employees

Approx 1800 were let go on 1/19

Oracle Hurt Cats Jan 25, 2017

To be fair, the 1800 is an unofficial estimate, based on anecdotal information - so could be higher or lower. It includes worldwide layoff, not just Santa Clara. Also, this number includes layoffs that happened earlier as well, so "on 1/19" isn't right.

From what I heard every R&D center got hit. Austin processor got hit. Burlington and SCA got hit hard. Personally I think Oracle is rethinking their commitment to h/w. My gut says we will make far fewer models from here out

Oracle ClouDev Jan 24, 2017

They are trying to divest from H/W, and that's not a secret (Safra said as much in last ER). From biz perspective, their customers are now in oracle D.C., so there is less hardware sold and upgraded. Thus, H/W is a burden on accounting.

Hence why I'm looking elsewhere

Game over for hw they thought they had a plan to sell but failed

Our days in hardware are numbered for sure. Most of the Systems group is moving into "maintenance mode". Already, we've dropped entire teams with no attempt to keep even a single person around with the ability to troubleshoot or fix some products. Any customer that relies on our HW or on Solaris better find a more stable platform and move to it quick! Our support roadmap is total fiction.
