Just cleared the background check and onboarding process for Meta's AR/VR hardware division. As an opto-mechanical engineer, I'm going to be using a lot of 3D CAD and PLM software, specifically NX and Teamcenter. The recruiter is giving me the option of choosing a PC or Mac as a work laptop (no specs listed). Is anybody familiar with what most mechanical engineers at Meta are using as their main computer? All my previous aerospace companies have given me a clunky "mobile" workstation since the nvidia quadro gpu is optimized for CAD programs, but I always hated the crap keyboard, trackpad, screen, portability, and battery life experience. Been super jealous of my SWE friends and their sleek M1 macbook pros. Found it odd that I even have an option to select a Mac, so I'm assuming there is precedent at Meta given its tech roots. Will my manager think I'm a straight dumbass for choosing Mac LOL? I just want iMessage on my laptop :( I also know Apple mechanical engineers run parallels or a vpn server set up on their machines, but not sure how viable that workaround is. TiA! Check with recruiter what kind of laptop your future teammates are using
Use a PC. Windows VM on Mac for cad tools is crap.
Honestly if I were you I’d bounce this back and email the hiring manager the same question & ask what the rest of the team has
