Why don’t India and Pakistan like each other? I am white and don’t understand
I used to be a standout among my friends in high school / early college - super ahead in quantitative subjects. Went to an Ivy, but didn’t have much of a social life for various personal reasons. Landed a job at Google senior year because LC fits my skill set. Now I see everyone who I was “better” than in pretty much the same position (FAANGs) or even better than me: some are founding YC-backed companies, some are off to top business schools. And yeah some are crypto rich. In FAANG I think we’re all just cogs in a big machine. Very hard to distinguish oneself and the skills that are rewarded during perf are having good communication (*cough* political), writing docs, and shipping LoC, rather than doing something a bit more creative. Someone from a boot camp can perform just as well. I’ve seen PhDs and physicists stuck (or coasting) at L4 / L5.. Do I go to a smaller company where I can do more quantitative work? Startup? Quant fund (interviewed with several top ones in college, several final rounds but no offers)? ML research team in Google? I want to be in a role where I’m around other smart people with similar skill sets (and yes higher upside ideally). NOTE: I left out that I don’t like coding mindlessly without a purpose. I’m closer to a Luddite tbh (given for example people’s addictions to social media) but it pays handsomely so I’m ofc grateful. I do appreciate how valuable the skill set is economically, I just find the process extremely dull. Edit 2: Appreciate the words of being grateful. Trust me - I don’t think there are many people who’re as grateful as myself given the circumstances ai mentioned in the first paragraph. TC: 300K, YOE: 3 #tech
Everyone is a cog in a wheel. Modern day capitalism is a flawed system to exploit your labor so the uber wealthy like bezos can live forever and become supreme emperor of the universe in 10000 years in whatever demented reality they live in. Stop worrying about advancing your career. You're making a lot of money at a top company. You've already made it. Figure out how to enjoy life and get out of the grind before it destroys you.
100% I vibe with this for sure. But I’m looking for people who can relate to my experience working at FAANG & having a skill mismatch. Would be great to hear how they made career decisions…
Stop comparisons. Life will automatically be good
Thanks I vibe with this for sure. But I’m looking for people who can relate to my experience working at FAANG & having a skill mismatch. Would be great to hear how they made career decisions…
Have you considered that nothing will make you happy unless you change your mindset?
I have considered this pretty deeply actually. Part of being in our 20s for better or worse is establishing a name for ourselves. Especially for men. Having a chip on your shoulder is good in limited quantities I feel. I want to prove myself.
According to Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, the main focus during the ages of 20-40 is usually to do with establishing intimate relationships and avoiding isolation. You might benefit from reevaluating your priorities in life.
Trying to put things in perspective. You have food, water, shelter, and then some. i just focus on learning and stuff that makes me happy outside of work. I dont like being caught up in corporate competitive bs. Still get burnt out here and there, but that’s everyone
Thanks I vibe with this for sure. But I’m looking for people who can relate to my experience working at FAANG & having a skill mismatch. Would be great to hear how they made career decisions…
Yoe? Most startups will perish during the upcoming Great Reset. The people going to business school will have also wasted their time. Again, due to the upcoming Great Reset. The people that are crypto rich will likely shine a lot more (if they don’t die) during the Great Reset. Invest in crypto, gold and silver. None of it will matter after the Great Reset. “You’ll own nothing and you’ll be happy.” - compliments of the World Economic Forum
Is this a troll

I can totally relate but I have no solution. You’ll learn how to deal with it over time. One thing that could help is joining a pre-ipo/startup company. You’ll grow faster in career or get rich faster. My TC tripled when I join Airbnb pre-ipo.
Wow tripled to what number? haha that’s awesome. Have considered this too recently. What do you think about early stage (top VC backed) vs late stage startups?
Previously I was a senior engineer at FAANG making 350K a year. Then I joined Airbnb pre-ipo last year and a few weeks later it went IPO. Based on current stock price my TC is 1M+. You graduated from ivy so I assume you have citizenship/green card, so no concerns with visa. Your YOE is 3 so I assume you don't have family yet. Therefore, you can take more risks. I would recommend joining an early stage backed by top VC. Early stage startups grow faster, and you grow together with the company, you can soon become a manager, then director, then maybe VP. When the company goes IPO you make big money and also have big title. Joining a late stage startup means you can cash out early once the company goes IPO, but the upside is also limited.
Don’t stay in Google for two long. It will destroy your soul because you’re a high achiever.
The biggest mistake that I made in my career is to stay in FAANG for too long. Meanwhile my friends went to startups like Uber, Airbnb, Snapchat and grew super fast.
You’re already doing fantastic. You should be proud of yourself
Thanks I vibe with this for sure. But I’m looking for people who can relate to my experience working at FAANG & having a skill mismatch. Would be great to hear how they made career decisions…
I get it, your feelings can’t be overlooked. However there are many people who are inspired by you, keep on inspiring them. If you are looking for next achievement it could be C suit leader in your company 😇
