Hey, I've watched some good reasonable explanations on why "GNU/Linux" isn't really a universal term for a Linux os at least because some Linux distributions don't have any GNU software in them (even the compiler tool chain is llvm). Wondering why rms still insists on using the term. I guess it makes sense to do it to honor the GNU project making all of this possible? But I feel like it just hurts the fsf today. Thoughts?
Rms is nuts
RMS is bullshit, hope he will let his doctor treat him with open source method before he dies
You got it backwards. You use gnu/Linux for systems that are a gnu userspace on top of Linux. If it’s not gnu on top then of course you don’t say that. You could argue wsl is gnu/nt, for example.
If you want to understand how mentally unstable RMS is simply look for his YouTube video meltdown.
I've seen a lot of his videos, he seems sane but maybe less sharp. Like, difficult to communicate with a bit but definitely in his right mind.
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
I read that in Stallman's voice, sounded legit!
He wants part of the credit. I understand, he did a lot of good work for it. And the fsf and GNU had the foundation and pillars of a different way of thinking about software. Linus didn't. He just didn't care. It was like hey I did this, it's cool, let's throw it out there. The fact that it worked so well but didn't preach about free software hurt rms. And the cause. I think he is really immature about it and that hurts the movement a lot, but I don't think he can change
