Path to L6 at FB or G
I have two job offers which are opposite ends of spectrum. Option 1: staff level at a series B startup; fairly sure that it has runway of 2-3 yrs Option 2: Non FAANG yet well known where the main job is only to publish. Currently at amazon L5 (equivalent to google L4) good at doing incremental/applied ML research (but nothing ground breaking) Which one is better option to becoming L6 at FB or G?

I don't think publishing is going to help you get to L6 much, that's the worst option. Frankly the best is going directly from Amazon to FB, either before promo to L6, "during" (i.e interview for L6 at FB/G while being L5 at Amazon), or after promo to L6 at Amazon. The startup option is iffy, staff at a startup is probably not too impressive, probably similar to L5 at FAANG, so you'd probably still be looking for some kind of promo at the startup.
Where is the option to get promoted then lateral?
(or the option to immediately go to F/G and then work up the ladder)
Or try to interview directly for L6 directly at FB/G
