A collection company sent me a letter to pay off some amount. Seems related to Quest Diagnostic. We may have missed the payment few months back. Should I pay to collections or Quest diagnostics directly. I had hard time paying Quest because they need some reference number which is not there on collection letter. I used to think that paying to actual firm is always better.
Don’t pay collections. Ever. Send them a debt validation letter with a threat to sue. They’ll fuck off.
Depends on the specific case. You can open a dispute as a first measure. And if you end up having to pay collections, get a written agreement that they will remove the collection completely from your credit report upon payment

Sounds very fishy to me. Quest should be able to tell you what your account balance is. They shouldn’t even need a reference number. I would really press Quest for this information. Make them tell you that you don’t owe any balance, and record it.
