People that say white, black, etc

I love seeing people talk about "white people do x" or "black people do y", " asians are good at z" It lets me know how many idiots there are out there. Seems like +90% of people are idiots who have fallen for this racial division that has been perpetuated over time. Race in America (& the world) is such a joke, and the majority of people fall for it Imagine saying, blue eyed people are good at math. Yea, it sounds dumb because that's how everyone mentioning racial things sound. Of course there are trends amongst people with common characteristics but it's not innate or intrinsic to anyone, and 99.9% of the time a function of culture and other extrinsic things . It's hilarious to see these feedback loops with race throughout the media, pop culture, etc. The majority of people eat it up without a second thought We all have 99.8% of the same DNA , but still act like someone with more or less melanin is in "another group". Anyway , it's good to know who isn't enlightened when they speak about race. I think it really comes down to ego and how the human brain is wired to categorize things (rightly or wrongly) We're all the same people, whether you want to admit it or not. Feel free to try to defend your ingrained stance Now back to your daily posts about Crypto and total compensation ....

0.2 % in you makes you think 90% balance of 99.8% belongs to category called 'iditots' ?

CACI Logic OP Jan 10, 2018

You're missing the point, but read up on where most of the genetic diversity is (hint : not where you expect) Anyway, I'm saying that most people don't even think about being 99.8% the same. They put people into buckets without ever giving it a second thought

I guess your point is to not discriminate. But it is still important to acknowledge differences. For example you are forgetting nature vs nurture effects. Even if black people or Asians have pretty much the same DNA, there could be huge differences in family upbringing due to long running societal advantages and disadvantages. That may lead to different behavior. Do not ignore these differences. One needs to be understand these facts and allow equal opportunities for growth etc when say they are manager of these. Also useful to understand people better.

Everyone knows blue eyed people see the world only in shades of blue

Apple NurseHubby Jan 10, 2018

You could also say: correlation is not causation. See Also: stereotypes. @Macchiato: You should definitely ignore those class differences when talking about an individual. See people for who they are, instead of as a member of a class. Ask about their experience rather than assume based on their ethnicity/nationality.

Oracle Macchiato Jan 12, 2018

No, you missed my point. Even seeing people for who they are requires to see everything about them, not ignoring some facet. What one should do is to “not base opportunities for hiring or promotion on ethnicity, sex etc”. Ignorance is not bliss. Take everything into account. For example if If you ignore a woman’s reluctance to join a work dinner alone with a male colleague, or not being able to work long hours because of a young kid, you ignore her being safety conscious or her responsibilities beyond work. If you ignore an Indian colleagues ethnicity, you may miss the fact that he or she has limited career mobility or not able to start up because of visa.

Apple NurseHubby Jan 12, 2018

No, I think you are missing the point: if you are assuming that your colleague ethnicity means that he probably needs a Visa, you are part of the problem. Many white people needs visas too. There are many people of Indian ethnicity with green card or US citizenship. I have ethnic Indian friends who are French (born and educated). Their background is very different from the stereotypical Indian tech worker. They get put into the same stereotypical bucket anyway. Their are many woman that don’t have children or want children. And there are many women who just don’t like to go out to diner for any number of reasons. You assume woman doesn’t want to go a work dinner means that she has kids at home or is “safety conscious” (whatever that mean) ? I’m a guy, I have kids at home too, so I leave early everyday, and don’t go to Beer bashes. Ethnicity and gender have almost ZERO relevance when talking about a single individual. They have relevance when trying to analyze large groups of people and average behaviors. So maybe you add more vegetarian options in the cafe menu because you have a lot of H1B workers from India and statistics shows that a lot of them are vegetarian. Or you have avocado toast because you have a large population of millennials. That’s ok in my book, even though there are usually better way to get the data you really need than using ethnicity, age or gender as a proxy. But again, if you are talking about an individual, their ethnicity has no practical relevance. Except for the fact that they probably experienced racism if they are not white...

How the fuck is this an AMA?

Credit Karma Johmy Jan 19, 2018

Yup “race” is a fairly recent social concept that doesn’t have any meaning outside of the specifics of modern society (and even in modern times “race” categories change depending on the decade or region of the world.) But, social conceptions still have very real consequences for social treatment and oppression. In other words we live in a colorblind (natural) world but not a color-blind society.

Wear neon glasses and have a new baseline color.

Zonar TpER51 Apr 4, 2018

Race is a meaningless concept. Awareness of cultural differences is fine, but we are hardwired to be tribal and to see others as OTHER. A sign of maturity and intelligence is to recognize these inherent biases and to refuse to fall into them.
