I lack a strong understanding of 5G technology but something that came up in my radar is the OpenRAN system which Rakuten pioneered. What are thoughts of people familair with 5G on this? Some notes on OpenRAN (correct me if I am wrong): + This system loosens the restrictions on being tied to a supplier which has big cost benefits and rollout times are faster + The downside is that the system is not as robust and there have been doubts on efficacy and performance + Japan/Rakuten has already rolled 5G using this tech in about 5% of the country and expect about 95% coverage by next Summer + Due to cost benefits, Rakuten does not charge extra for 5G services to existing customers + When measured the performance was almost on par with other 5G competitor services but when it came to roaming the performance dropped + Rakuten is aggresively getting into partnerships with latin americans and European companies to expand. Thats all I know so far, if someone can shed more light that would be great! PS: I am interested in Rakuten stock. It’s a very interesting stock in that it trades OTC and not on a big exchange and has very low volume. The price has stagnated around $10-11 for 5 months now. I think it could move very strongly if OpenRAN expands and is a huge success. #tech #rakuten #5G #openran

OpenRAN (along with vRAN) is definitely happening and is the future of RAN.
Thanks for the insight. And do you think Rakuten is pivotal to this? From my understanding, Rakuten is leading the openRAN movement but maybe others are doing this as well just less publicly at the moment?
