have been getting weirdly negative feedback from my manager for a few months , that my 5-6k lines of code , 4-5 Project delivery from scratch including engineering and QA excellence, 1 research papers(rejected though), multiple design docs, are not enough for good reviews because my Aura/Authority is not visible on the team. As per My manager, he has to struggle in front of senior leadership for my better reviews.. What is the exact benchmark for Staff roles in terms of design, project delivery, line of code, PR review, it seems it's not clear across Walmart. What's a good benchmark across industry for Staff software Backend. Any Principal Engineers or Staff engineers across industry can guide me here ? #tech #walmart @walmart #code #staffsoftwareengineer Blind Tax : 52 lpa + 25% bonus
As a staff engineer, you are the scapegoat for your director. You will be evaluated on BS such as lines of code as well as meeting and influencing other projects aka you need to shove your ass inside other people's projects. Good luck politicking. Alternatively, work in a nicer company where management does more than just performance reviews.
Agree I feel I have joined bad company just for money
At staff, you need to be influencing people around you. Steering projects and designs. None of the benchmarks you’re talking about (lines of code, PR reviews) demonstrate that. Instead of coming here to ask for the expected numbers for those benchmarks, you should be listening to your manager and becoming demonstrably involved in your broader team’s work. You need to be able to show that due to your involvement, Joe’s design for Foo was simplified/made more robust. And that when Jane came to you for help with your area of expertise, you were able to steer her towards Bar, saving her time and effort. It’s been months of this feedback though, and you haven’t even internalized it, let alone acted on it. I don’t know how much time you have left to turn it around. It would be worthwhile prepping for interviews. And if you’re not actually interested in doing the influence work going forward, don’t take another staff job.
I have influenced other Projects design, even contributed to research work of other project. Problem Influence can't be measured on paper with any metric, talk on data point @truthier If you code well, design well, achieve difficult project, set good enginnering practice in team, start some engineering project from scratch shows ur influence. But still ur work can be measured not influence it's just openion of a person.
You’re right that it’s harder to quantify, but that just means it needs to be proven differently. Get written feedback from the people whose projects you influenced. Get feedback for the impact of the engineering practices you’ve set. At staff, the people you’re influencing should be outside of your manager’s team, so you should also ask your manager’s peers for feedback on how you’re doing. They should be able to see your work impacting their teams. It’s possible you’re doing everything right and your manager sucks. If that’s the case, then it should be easy for you to collect the above feedback and hand it to your manager to make it easier for them to defend a higher rating for you. It’s also possible that you’re not actually making the broad organizational impact that you’re expected to have at staff. In sourcing the above feedback, you might uncover that as well.
Your TC is low for staff. You must make more. Leave and boomerang back. WMT is a great place for rest and vest.
Hope rest and vest part is true for.majority of the teams
start interviewing at the same time 😉
I think I'll have to 😂 issue is if I get bad reviews despite this much work, other team may not hire me, I'll have to start outside only 🤔
Outside only. Plus your TC is lower than what I was offered for IN4 in 2021. You need a big jump.
