It’s amazing how perplexity.ai backs up its answers by citation on the other hand reasoning of open AI is iffy Google search is trash with hyperlinks with fake content/paid content being advertised on top. Most of the times ranking is hacked by SEO experts. Keep on wasting time on going though different webpages to get the answer. Doubtful of Google’s future & dominance in search. yes just wanted to make the point that it’s very hard to change user behavior. It can be done but it’s hard. Defaults matter. So as long as Chrome is the browser with largest share and Google search is on safari it’s going to be hard to move people to something else.
Who will buy a subscription for search when we have been hard wired to search for free for 25 years, changing user behaviour is not a trivial problem. Also, do you think providing citations is a hard problem and google cannot do it?

Not necessarily. As someone who worked in SEO and has done a lot of SEO related work, AI isn’t going to magically kill SEO as you would think, especially since it’s becoming more a multi-disciplinary field rather than the historically specialized field that it’s always been. You have to remember that Google’s algorithm updates are not to be messed with, and even now there’s a lot of work around using Generative Search for keyword rankings. AI-generated content is present, but you also have to remember the fact that Google has historically penalized duplicate or reused content, and continuously updates their algorithm to be able to adapt to AI (for better or for worse). I don’t think SEO will be killed entirely, but I do think SEO experts will likely become the same marketing generalists that you are nowadays, especially as they have to increasingly justify the value of certain marketing initiatives in a market that is not favorable to marketers. The book SEO In 2024 is a great book if you want to get a better understanding of how AI is actually going to affect SEO type work, and how those same experts perceive AI.
