I am planning to do Ph.D in Artificial Intelligence / machine learning. I feel that is the only way for me to survive next 10-15 years. My current field does not have much options. I am currently working and married with kids. What options do you suggest for me for pursuing Ph.D . I see lot of reputed universities are asking for full time Ph.D and no part time. Which universities are good for my situation? And I should be able to get through into FAANG companies with that Ph.D immediately. YOE : 15 TC: 350K #tech #phd #faang #ai
Bad idea. Unless u r very academically inclined. Better to get a job in small ai startup for 1 year.
Thank You. Will start ups take me into AI role ?. I don’t have experience in AI.
If u can code u can get into AI. Most ai work is hacking around existing model. And building data pipelines. Very few too notch talent is doing foundational work. And very few people have brain capacity to do it. Biggest challenges in Ai is to scale up training and inference. They are all infra problem. Eg. How can u parallelize stochastic gradient across data centers.
Yeah that will be a demotion if you’re a fresh PhD grad. And they won’t take you part time.
Come on, after 15 YOE you have this kind of irrational fear?
Yes, my current skill either IC or EM track is saturated and no growth for me.
What evidence do you have of that?
Terrible idea
If you are just doing it for the career advancement that sounds like a recipe for failure. It's expensive to get a PhD, it'll hold you back from your other pursuits including work and family... unless you want to do research or teach this seems like a bad call.
U r too late
How are your math skills? How's your capacity to self direct yourself for many months researching and not losing your motivation as nothing progresses and seems stagnating? A PhD requires a lot of motivation
My math skills are good . You raised a valid point on losing self motivation. My main goal was to move to leadership positions in AI /ML/ NLP areas which I am not able to with my current skills . So, I thought of exploring this Ph.D route . But , based on replies that I have got in this thread , I might not go with Ph.D route . But , I am stuck on which direction to go now.
Do a Master and practice with side projects related to AI/ML/Statistics.
A PhD is a hardcore project. Many fail, even when young, desperate and without other responsibilities.
I gather most say don’t do it. but, What if the PhD is from Harvard university, still not worth it?

For 15 yoe you shouldn’t need a PhD to go into top companies. You sure AI is still as popular once you graduate phd in 5-7 years?
This. Get a PhD in a foundational course of computer science like computer vision, compiler design, etc. WTF is a PhD in AI anyway? Sounds like a scam.
AI might not be popular in next 5-7 years , but I want to move to AI / machine learning which I have wide options. Considering current market situation. @American Express - I meant Ph.d in machine learning , neural networks , NLP etc..
