I’ve been skeptical of claims and experiences that everyone seems to have about how phone mics are listening to private, offline conversations for purposes of data collection and advertising. This week I got a rock chip in the glass of my car. I was having a chat w my partner about whether it’s worth fixing and replacing. Neither of us have ever searched for anything about car windshield replacements. Earlier today my partner was on Youtube and suddenly, there’s an ad for Safelite auto glass. Tonight, we’re watching a show on NBC on demand and suddenly, every commercial break has an ad for auto glass repairs. Neither of us have never seen this ad before today. Does anyone know which companies/apps/etc are collecting and providing this data, and how to stop it (I’ve already turned off mic access on all third party apps)?
You have to look into who else you or your partner told. Any of them could have searched something about auto glass and the ad networks can tie that back to you. Did you go to an auto glass store? Did you fix the auto glass and use a credit card to do so? Both the geo location and the company you used the card with can be tied back to you for ads. security researchers has determined through experimentation that no apps are doing what you say. There are just very sophisticated ways of tracking and targeting a person.
Google play services, search, maps all of them had microphone settings on by default in my phone. After I turned them off I no longer get ads based on conversations I have at home.
