L4 Google -> 45 interviews, 5 offers, AMA
Hello, I joined Apple after PhD. Please evaluate my current TC. YOE: Apple ~1.7 years Base: 140k Unvested RSU (with appreciation): $145k (Got $40k refresher) (vests over 4 years) Last cash bonus: $5k (May last year) Level: ICT3 Location: Austin Am I underpaid? It feels like so as I have become owner of several key items and often need to work under a lot of pressure. Many companies (probably including Apple) are paying/offering a lot in the last few months. Should I try getting an offer? Posted the same in Apple topic with one additional question: If I get 7/9 in performance review, how much refresher I may expect in the second year? #tech
Are u expecting same TC at Cirrus logic or Silicon labs with 1.7-year YOE? If no, I guess you’re not underpaid.
Few other friends from grad school entered job market recently. They got 145k-155k base, 100k-140k RSU at companies with good cash bonus. These offers are for West Coast, so there will be higher taxes and living costs. However just middle of last years the recent grads were getting ~15k lower base, and much lower RSU. So the market is changed. Of course relatively smaller companies would not be able to pay similar numbers, I was focusing on big names.
Just FYI, I am not unhappy about my TC. Maybe getting a bit of FOMO.
You can make more by dashing
I think it’s good TC in Austin. The problem in Austin is that with lower cost of living, your equity is probably less as well. However, wealth is built on equity, so even in west coast with hcol, a bigger equity refresher shall win in the long run-if you believe in what you are working in.
By equity, do you mean stocks?
Yeah. I think if you are in Bay Area, you can probably get 170k+ base and 400k equity at FANNG if you re-interview. The base probably won’t make up for state tax and col, but the equity will boost your savings later.
You can easily get 250k TC with google meta Tesla nvidia as a L4/e4/ic4 in austin which is ict3 equivalent. You can probably aim for 300k TC if your PhD aligns with the work. HW salaries are basically the same as software but we get down leveled a bit more heavily.
I don’t have a lot of data points for google HW salary in Austin. Also, I am not sure how strong the HW teams are in Austin. I am also concerned to go for a team that is not part of the main revenue stream of a company FYI, I don’t plan to move out of Austin any time soon. Question: can you please comment on what is the job security over there?
Nobody can guarantee job security. I was part of the samsung sarc layoff and everyone was able to find a nice new place. So I won’t worry too much about that as long as you are good at what you do
Blind makes you think everybody in tech is making 500k/yr. It’s just not true. Your pay will start to climb at around. 2-3 years post-phd. All the doctorate gets you is a higher starting base. The rest is standard performance and portfolio building.
IC3 at $140k is good. I never even got close to that and I was an ic3.
Making same with no degree and 7 yoe. Pretty glad I didn’t go for that bachelors debt now. But everyone at apple corporate owns several initiatives and is under pressure. We’re all in that boat.
What role is this/team
SEG. Don’t want to share more details :)
Here’s kids for you these days. You give them a good assignment and room to grow, and they’re immediately like, “I have big responsibilities now. I must be underpaid!”
Ok boomer
Thank you for your (condescending) comment. Yes, our generation is willing to fight for more. Why not?
Is that invested rsu over 4 years or per year?
Over 4 years
