Poll: Is it safe to share your heterodox political views at work?

Just curious. I saw someone get lambasted on internal chat today, and I want to know how frequently this happens.

No, every time I try and discuss the pros and cons of ISIL, I get fired and then monitored and then indefinitely held in a black site by the government.

Deserved reaction for suggesting there is any cons related to the caliphate

It's rough out there. 😂

What did they say? Why are people discussing politics in the internal chat unless it's Facebook related? Clearly too much time on your hands

Never a great idea, especially somewhere that's permanently logged.

Serious reply: How are you defining unorthodox views? Discuss with whom, how and when? You mean heterodox like talking about forming a union at your job and striking? Voting for a third party? Some new fad diet? Liking baseball but not complaining about it? Or more bizarrely heterodox like arguing that sleep is unnecessary? That hipsters should be round up and put in re-education camps? The moon is made of cheese? Women are biologically worse at science? Immigrant coworkers should loose their visas and be deported? Barking dogs told you when the world would end?

My intent for the poll is as regards political views. I'm defining heterodox as simply being outside the political norm, whatever that may be where you are. That includes what you've defined as bizarrely heterodox. I would say that whatever we label as bizarre is subjective and varies wildly between cultures and locations, which is why I kept the language simple. I agree that context is everything. In this case I thought the person was respectful and mostly relevant to the business related item we were discussing. , In general I guess I sort of assume that people are respectful at work since their livelihood depends on it. It is a big assumption though. My intent is simply to get an idea of how prevalent otherization is in the tech community for people outside the political mainstream.

How about supporting Trump?

What’s “heterodox”? A Trump voter?

I would not advise anyone to discuss their political views at work, but Satya and Comrade Smith encourage it by their expressions...just so long as you don't disagree with them. Best for dissenting opinions to keep quiet at Microsoft.
