Recently left MBB to join industry, it’s a relatively mature / tech-fwd company but I am struggling with the speed there, and am bored / find a lot of meetings inefficient and pointless. I am pretty high strung even for MBB and I know I would struggle with the new mindset shift and new way of working and slower speed out of consulting but I am realllly struggling inside. Anyone have similar issues switching out of MBB into industry? How do you cope?
I did the same thing and it was a terrible decision staying longer than a year. You do not want to stay in a boring place for a more than a few months. Change industries, change jobs, start studying, build side projects. It’s never worth working with B players.
Did you have to make any payment back (signing bonus etc.) to the company after you left and went back to consulting? Also, how did you quit? Gave two weeks or just left? Did you go back to the same consulting company? Looking to make a similar decision. Thanks!
Go to a faster pace company. Smaller high growth, too many interesting high impact problems, not enough people
That’s just how the industry is, you’re suppose to grow to a leadership position and lead them. Also, I find developing a hobbit outside of the job will be the days less grueling.
how do you grow hobbits
What BCG said. Developing hobbits is always a good idea - they need direction.
Loled so hard.
Don’t make life all about your work alone. If the work is easy, take time for your personal interests, sports, reading books, writing posts etc.
I was in Monitor-Deloitte and not MBB. So my experience may be different. But encountered the same speed bump when i transitioned out of consulting and into tech. The pace is slow but like others said, i started building a life outside work. I realized for the first time what work-life balance means. Also, i started to notice that though things move slow outside consulting people put a lot more thought, explore different perspectives, and build stronger consensus before executing things. That said, i don’t think slowing down is a bad thing. Losing the sharp focus on just getting things done and exploring/ learning along the way is something i am starting to appreciate outside consulting.
Maybe you should chill?
To be honest it doesn't sound too bad there. Wouldn't you have a life if it's slower pace? vs. no life and grinding in consulting?
Ok update. After one year at this company working about 5-6 hrs a day and getting paid way more than mck - I have to say - life is pretty damn good
Go back to McK then
If you have nothing helpful to say, don’t say it
This is helpful though in that it’s an obvious solution. If you hate your job in industry, go back.
