Given product management's imminent death as a job category (Meta eliminated TPM function altogether, others are doing the same], what are some of you who are PMs planning to do? Any job roles or career options in mind?

TPM is a program management role, not product management.
Why is meta eliminating Technical Program Manager (and just for Instagram, right?) role an indicator that Product Managers are on the way out? You're talking about a totally different job function.
Shhh donât tell him! Yes OP, your thorough analysis of the situation is correct: PM as a discipline is on borrowed time. All PMs with less than 10 YOE should pivot to something else more impactful like becoming baristas. And those of us with more than 10 YOE are SOL and are doomed and headed towards IT management jobs at non-tech companies for a quarter of the TC
I mean, OP has a strong conclusion from a misunderstood data point, and is using it to make some other unrelated change. Plenty of PMs do that and claim to be data driven. Ironically, OP is showing PM skills! No?
Rajesh calm down. Someone still has to go to meetings dev donât want to go to
Theyâll become nontechnical EMs who focus on âwhatâ instead of âhowâ. Hmm, what would we call that? Letâs call it a user priority manager, aka UPM, also known as U? PM? Go to this meeting because I want to walk my dog.
PM is the ultimate coast.
I see the role expectations of PMs to also include program management in the future.
Nooooooooo! It's informally the case for a lot of projects but would hate for it to be formal
As you said, its already happening and people are starting to question the value of program managers. Its just a matter if time. Another role which is going to merge is product marketing and PMs. More and more consolidation i believe is going to happen. It sounds overwhelming but i already see this happening gradually happening in our company.
This guy is slow.
TPM at Meta was for Technical Project Managers!
When did they get rid of it?
