I interviewed with Google recently. The interview went well and HR wants to extend me an offer for L4. Given the same total compensation ~ 270K, should I choose higher base (~167K) less RSU or lower base (~160K) higher RSU? I know cash is always better than future equity. But there are some people saying it is better to join Google with lower base because the base will be eventually adjusted to match your level and performance. Joining with high base means the future base growth is limited. Any advice? Also in terms google's annual refresh and bonus, would manager give you less refresh and bonus because your base is high? Thanks!
Go with higher base
could you give some brief explanation why go with higher base?
Many benefits such as ESPP, bonus, 401k limits are often based off of the Base salary. Also it is better to have 1 in hand than 2 in the bush. You can buy shares with the extra money you get too if you want.
For every level there is min & max base salary. If you reach tha cap, you will eventually pushed to next level easily & more over your performance bonus depends on your base
Thanks New/IT. I would go with high base first per your advice. I like your name:)
YOE?
3.5 YoE.
The order of preference you should request is base, RSU and finally the sign-on. Guaranteed money is better than speculation. Also, your annual bonus is determined by your base.
Thanks Microsoft. Then I would like to shoot for high base firstly.
How much in RSU? 7k in base delta is not that much to be debating heavily about unless the RSU package is rich
No RSU package is not rich. The total compensation would be the same.
Base, no question. Bird in hand. You might be somewhere else in 2 years
They are going to be much more flexible on RSU then base salary. If you are looking to get the most out of them, your best chance is RSU haggling.
Thanks Facebook. I will try to ask more RSU if possible.
Bay area.
I will take higher rsus unless you are an investment expert. Google is not going away for 10 years. So future stock will be higher than base. Especially if you are young and dont have big budget expenditures.
Thanks. I do not have big budget now but I will have soon if I need to buy a home in bay area. I think it is a better idea to get high base from Google then use cash to buy Amazon's stock. AMZN performs stronger than GOOGL, right?
Yes but if you are buying with your own money there are other better stocks as well. Okta, paypal..etc have been rising higher.
higher base will get you even higher base on your next job or when you get promoted. and i like more money in my pocket

Asians - what are your thoughts on asian female white male ?
Congratulations!! Can you spend couple of minutes to tell us your study plan and how many questions you solved?
Thanks. I mainly focus on leetcoding. Solve ~500 questions. My onsite questions are mostly leetcode medium level but those are new questions. Be able to come up with different solutions and analyze the time/space complexity. Be confident and explain your ideas clearly enough during the interview.
Awesome. Great number. Will keep in mind. 😊
