I asked for a significant raise because my responsibilities and work load have majority increased recently - I was put into a lead role of two very large projects when someone left. I explained how I got the number I asked for and they said they might have to break it up the whole number and do it in steps. I said that was fine expect because of that the number would increase because I wpuld need to cover the regular yearly increase and i am ultimately missing out on X amount between step 1 and the last step. I also told them that I wanted the increase amount and dates they would take effect in writing (I've seen people be told their raise would be done in steps and then it comes time to make the next step they get jerked around for a couple more months or they flat out can't get it because the person that agreed is no longer in that position). During this discussion, I was told that if they were to raise my salary to what I was asking that I would be pricing myself out of projects. And this really made me kind of angry because to me that means that they don't actually believe I am worth what I'm asking (because it's no where near the high point of my group) and they were trying to scare me out of wanting such a high number by implying people wouldn't want to give me work in the future. /rant
It’s a good point but it gets to haggling to a number your seniority likes
They might think they can do better. And it’s probably true, why not just hire another person who can focus on that one project?
I mean... I'm never going to claim the the smartest or the best at what I do. But I will say that I'm damn good at it. And i would love for them to hire someone else to focus on one of these projects or the one that's going to kickoff next week or the two after that. But even if they do my number wouldn't change because my responsibilities wouldn't decrease at all.... We currently have 3 recs open for various levels that we can't fill and (IMO) that's not going to be enough to cover the work that will kick off in the next six weeks. That being said we've always been focused on hiring the right people... for the job and for the team dynamic. We have to be able to work well together... the final products have to be completely seamless. If my team is sending out three things at the same time to the same client but for 3 different projects in three different locations... it still needs to look as if the same 1 person did all of it.
Are you managing the PNL for the projects?

Being priced out of projects means they can only afford to put you on the most valuable projects... So win-win?
Yep. I agree with OP that they're trying to scare him, but he can come right back with the response you describe. And if they're not receptive, OP, you can use the additional responsibilities and experience to get a different job. Since they're jerking you around a bit, it's probably worth it to at least interview elsewhere to see what they offer you.
Btw... her... not him... And that was the thought I had... what does it even matter because the projects that I work on are always the most valuable. That's why my program manager doesn't have a problem with it. It's my actual bosses that are dragging there feet and telling me that I'm pricing out. I put some feelers out to some other places and gotten a couple interviews soo we'll see what happens. :/
