I recently cleared an interview loop for Principal Engineering Manager at Microsoft as I got an informal yes recently from the recruiter. I've been told that I should get a final offer sometime next week. I have the option to work out of Redmond or Atlanta. How much should I expect for TC? Are there different internal levels for this role and what do you think that level would be for me? Will the salary be different for Redmond vs Atlanta? Current role: SDM (L5) - Amazon Seattle, been leading a 2 pizza team for almost a year, should get L6 SDM by Q1 2023 (top 25% connect score rating) YOE: 6 Targeted TC: 257k
How can 6 yoe get Principal EM. Likely will be senior EM
Nope - explicitly clarified. Having said that, should I even go for Principal EM? Or am I shooting myself in the foot? I mean I have a track record of high ratings and being able to deliver things both as a tech lead and an SDM. I was previously at Microsoft and went from (industry hire) L59 -> L61 within 1.5 yrs. I remember when I was there, I'd see Principal EMs as a Godly figure because all of the Principal EMs under my GEM were extremely smart.
Is there a coding round for principal EM at MS?
Should be L65 around 350-400k
Yes, Atlanta less than Redmond salary. Principal varies 65-67 but at only 6 yoe I’d assume 65.
Base should be 15 or so percent less.
Can you share what tech questions were asked ? Coding difficulty? Thanks
Wait you can be an SDM at L5? I thought you have to be at least a L6 to be a manager?
Can you please share the breakdown of MSFT offer ?
OP what’s your offer
Is principal EM level at msft just a normal line manager?
Yeah it is iirc.
No, you can be senior software engineer manager too. It's rare though. Most common is indeed principal
