Let's compile a list of companies who still have private offices for engineers. I'll start: VMware: double occupancy, senior and higher, big office. No plan to switch to open space Microsoft: Mountain View only. Sunnyvale has offices for researchers and Azure teams, the rest are open space. On going plan to convert to open space.
Amazon has shared usually for L7 or higher but that's also disappearing, rest is open
Oracle HQ: cubes all around. I haven't seen open spaces. Shared offices for senior ICs. Mid-and-up mgrs get offices. Mid level mgrs though have an additional criteria, such as "at lest 3 reports at the same location as the mgr", IIRC. I believe the sun campus has offices, but don't know for sure.
I've visited Sun. There are small offices. Not sure if they're still there. What about the Oracle building in downtown SJ (close to Adobe?)
All open, but there are several different areas in our offices now. Even highest C-level don't have a private office
Apple: depends on the team. I've seen a lot of double occupancy and it is the standard in my building. But new campus is supposed to be mostly open-space.
Box all open floorplans. Nobody gets an office or cube, including execs.
SFDC: SVP and above
Oracle East Coast locations are still normal office/cube setups. Heck in some locations there are dozens of empty offices you can just take over and camp out in when you're in town.
LNKD: All open, not even C-level have offices. You can grab drop-in rooms if you need quiet time, but it's hard to take your two external monitors in there with you.
All open space. TK has a dedicated conf room.
He's not the only one who does. We have many conference rooms taken offline for exec use only. I think it's pretty fair
Microsoft in Redmond is still majority private offices. They are converting portions of the office to open space for those that prefer it or smaller teams, but majority of the company is offices.
It is not only for those that prefer it. Buildings are being remodeled as they get to them. It's just taking a long time because we have more than a hundred buildings and we don't have the spare capacity to remodel half the buildings at once.
