News getting round about layoffs at Waymo: https://techcrunch.com/2023/01/24/waymo-lays-off-staff-as-alphabet-announces-12000-job-cuts/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAKCGruzHuJZUfCvqCQB5XoDouIxu0ybp6Q2POH8EkdMpI8uWyUn8z7ku1ldTL2JqmIw9jqyoEtAjKr2Iiwe6zMuCZ7mzjX_--TlJlKRS0JlusdDRqTKZozgEzy9Mm9U_4fhqmvKIjzQACyPHiR8YdwLii8yaX7p3mjT2LTmFHxSf&fbclid=IwAR03a8bl1uYQ7WYav4RI45BcxQmUAXZXpvkPUBn2UYejI5yzooLuhWfQTDI Of course this comes after Argo AI closed down last year as well. What do people think about the probability of layoffs coming to Cruise? Leadership seemed to all but say outright that there wouldn't be any during all hands, but the environment for AV's seems bad right now. And ultimately GM calls the shots, of course. Any thoughts? #layoffs #cruise
Leadership usually give bs during all hands. Don’t trust their word about lay-offs
Most AV tech companies has problem of right timing. The same happened to AR/VR and META.. Infrastructure is not ready yet. If you have a chance or opportunity, move to more stable market.
Most AV companies sucked. 🫡 Waymo & Cruise are actually doing something
Lol by skipping all safety levels for sure haha
Doesn’t cruise have an insane runway?
AV is 10 years away. Deep learning isn’t enough to solve the problem statement. We need a breakthrough. Can come in the form of ML research or from hardware. Many insiders are realizing this and jumping ship.
Nope.
Massive cope ^^
First signs that layoffs might be happening is if they have a hiring freeze
Cruise is cancelling unlimited PTO for contractors, that sounds familiar to MS right before their layoff. Maybe that’s a sign of laying off contractors after April?
Why contractor at cruise has unlimited PTO? Aren't they get paid hourly anyway?
No idea how that works. Maybe they used to have unlimited PTO hours still getting paid, but now that comes to an end.
People will deny layoff potential until it happens. Just like Meta and Google employees. If Cruise does layoff I can't imagine the cuts will be significant in numbers. Maybe a thinning of low performers. Idk. Time will tell. I personally think we will see cuts of some kind within a year.
With Cruise enforcing Amazon like ratings/rankings this year, it's going to go downhill pretty fast. There won't be layoffs, but could be PIPs soon. Depends on engine check results.
I don’t know whether the problem of AV is solved or not but as long as av companies can find a way to operate cheaper than Uber, av companies will exist and thrive
Heard about 30 people were let go last week. Any further details on layoffs?
That impacted recruiting only. No other layoffs to report yet
I see. Good luck. Tough times
Isn’t cruise owned by GM? They’re probably dragging their feet in doing cuts. Boomers move slowly.
