Main point: Laid back engineering culture, privacy issues and cancellation of services will eventually lead to Google's demise. Problems: 1. Search is down the drain. https://weirdmarketingtales.com/why-people-are-adding-reddit-to-their-google-searches 2. GCP is losing out to competitors. It has a pathetic customer services and issues with deprecation of services https://steve-yegge.medium.com/dear-google-cloud-your-deprecation-policy-is-killing-you-ee7525dc05dc and https://medium.com/@serverpunch/why-you-should-not-use-google-cloud-75ea2aec00de 3. Youtube is cutting out features to be premium only https://www.ghacks.net/2022/10/02/rumor-you-may-soon-need-youtube-premium-to-watch-4k-video/ and https://www.firstpost.com/tech/news-analysis/youtube-to-show-users-5-unskippable-ads-instead-of-two-before-a-video-starts-currently-testing-feature-11252071.html 4. Ads business US lawsuit https://searchengineland.com/google-offering-concessions-to-avoid-doj-lawsuit-386333 5. Privacy is a very well known issue. 6. No new product. From my research, google internally moves very slowly. Culture is laid back, promotions are slow and there is basically no real incentive to innovate but maintain the status quo. This is the same at MSFT in terms of culture except Azure. MSFT realized early on they needed speed over anything else for Azure cause they are against mega pip factory i.e. AWS. That boat has sailed for GCP. Thoughts? PS: I don't like Amazon. I wish I was born earlier so I could join Google in 2001, ride it out until 2020 and then peacefully retire with all the money I made. Probably start my own startup with the experience working on search, bigtable, chubby, GFS, etc. TC: 300K #google #gcp #cloud #culture #azure #aws
Bing is going to win, within a decade. Search quality at par + better User Experience with more innovative features Numbers already show large gains in market share, 20% growth YOY. Growth on mobile is really slow but that’s because desktop is the current priority.
Interesting. Didn’t realize I wasn’t the only one who adds “Reddit” to their Google searches.
It's a weird problem. Google results suck, but Reddit search is completely useless. If reddit improved their search they'd probably benefit quite a lot from the additional ad revenue (which currently goes to Google and their sponsored links).
Yup that’s me. I always add “site:reddit.com” to all my G queries
Hate yt ads
They gotta somehow pay them high TCs ;)
I pay for premium. Super worth, especially as I can play videos with my screen locked (and yes I know I could do some roundabout way on Android but I'm lazy. Plus for the entertainment value I get out of it, absolutely worth it.
some of your observations might be accurate at the moment, but Google aint going anywhere IMO. lesser companies (than them) thrive just fine and will continue to do so.
More likely to me is Google goes the way of Meta; investors see they can't count on infinite growth, so the stock comes down to Earth as it can't justify the ridiculous P/E ratio. Meta's stock has gone from a P/E of ~30 2 years ago to ~11 as of writing. 11 is pretty reasonable for a company without much growth ahead of them. Google currently sits at 18.
Google may relegate to a position of IBM. Churn out research papers and some open source things but not really that impactful business wise.
Worst case scenario Yahoo
It can all fall to pieces, quickly. That’s the Yahoo lesson.
Precisely. No such thing as too big to fail. Heard this from AOL, HP, GE, SUNW, Nokia & RIM (Blackberry) before
Those damn YT ads are a buzzkill.
Gen z are more likely to search on TikTok and instagram than use google search/maps.
Ah America. Where any time you achieve dominance everyone is gunning for you downfall. Ironically there’s no word in English for this but we use “Schadenfreude” from German. Google’s been fat, dumb, and happy based on ad revenue. It weathered the 2008 downturn because of those billions of dollars a minute from ads. They’re still getting the best people because people can transition from academia to “the real world” and get 500k without delivering anything (or creating the newest version of chat/wave/talk/whateverdafuq) Google can’t/won’t scale with people and thinks it has the “right” way. Rationally, they’re right. Unfortunately people aren’t rational. Google will trim the fat and be fine. Lots of people will get disillusioned with GOOG and tech in general. Downturns are like that.
I don't know why anyone would choose GCP given our track record. I came from Amazon and hated it with a passion, but if I'm running a business and need cloud computing/storage, I'm going with aws
Same. There are days I despise how much of a meat grinder AWS is, but damn….cbell ran a tight ship.
We don't have cbell anymore though and Swami keeps pushing AI/ML unnecessary in all products. AI/ML products need to cut down from AWS to run it more tighter.
