Musings (rant?) of an old timer
I'm considering PM roles at Amazon, but am concerned about all the WLB rumors. I don't mind putting in the hours, but do want flexibility on what those hours are, how much of that time is required onsite, and the ability to WFH 1-2 days a week. I've had this at every tech job I've had thus far. At Amazon, I hear this depends on the team. Does anyone know which teams tend to be better about flexibility and which def are not? Am considering Alexa, Fire, and Prime Video teams. #amazon #product #WLB
I am an ex-Amazon PMT. WFH is pretty non existent and infact you should expect to work on weekends as well - at least 1 day. Shitty WLB is not just a rumor - it's a fact. I know what all I have missed over 3 years.
Same could be said about where I work now. Absolutely under-resourced, poor planning, last minute deadlines. Many people work late hours and weekends. But there are teams that mandate it and teams that simply expect you to get your work done (however unreasonable that workload/deadline may be) - and don't really care how/where you get it done. The latter I can deal with. I just don't want a micro-manager that only thinks I'm working if they can see me sitting in the office.
On the retail side, for most teams you’ll get flexibility after you earned trust 6-9 months in unless you cannot keep up with the pace. If you’re a little bit more than avg, you’ll get there.
Lol! Good luck with that.
