Been on the market for about 8 months, and nothing has panned out. Open to any feedback on my resume. I'm applying at all levels, remote, hybrid, etc. #pm #product #jobs #resume #resumereview
Be selective, they won’t hire you for IC or managerial roles. Focus on exec search, don’t sell yourself short.
Ah interesting. So go to like the Korn Ferry's of the worlds? Thank you for the feedback!
Yes, do exec search w places that specialize in growth-stage companies or startups to get VP/C-Lev jobs. Most exec roles are filled off-market. I think you’ll struggle to get comparable roles in big tech bc while the roles sound impressive, the dollar amounts are more modest. Also, while your resume is superficially impressive, it is very short on specifics and you emphasize the wrong parts (e.g., this has gotta be the first time that conducting a marketing audit resulted in an 11x ROAS (plus, who cares about the audit?! It is the ROAS that matters - say how you did it!!)) Finally, your skills section is a bit of a laundry list. Pare it to what you’re specialized/competent in. You’re not an MLE, so having made a notebook and using PyTorch to fit a NN doesn’t matter. You’re not in corp dev or a banker, so acquisitions experience (unless it is team/tech integration) doesn’t matter. You’re a very senior product leader w/ experience on a range of products - that is your brand - now sell it!!
I really appreciate the feedback. Thank you very much!
It's a tough market. Easier to get a seed round than it is to get a job
Not to discourage were you ever an engineer most products are tech related. Also you went from PM to CPO —-> no Gpm/ principal in the middle. For all levels you would come across as either over qualified or this person has no tech background. Dont cast a wide net you might not catch any the fish net is too small or have big gaping holes through which the fishes always slip.
I was never an engineer, but I have a strong tech background. Coded and build several apps myself, and have a good understanding of what makes thing possible/impossible. Regarding the titles, I definitely had stepping stones along the way. Director, VP, SVP.
Summary reads very standard - would put emphasis on what makes you unique
Thank you! I'll take a closer look there.
DM for SAP and anyone else for a referral!
I have nowhere near the experience that you do nor the credentials/qualifications. So if this works for me, it’ll work for anyone reading that is much more qualified. I got tired of getting auto rejection after auto rejection so i changed my strategy. For example, I’ve been trying to get into Disney for years. Over 20 applications, all rejected. I then decided to just go on LinkedIn and reach out to recruiters directly. I messaged about 15 of them with the link to the req and my resume. They all ghosted me except for one. But that’s all it takes, is just one. They connected me with the recruiter responsible who set up the initial screening and now, two weeks later, I’m in the final round for a SWE II position. So essentially my advice would be: 1) find a job that matches your skillset 2) go on LinkedIn and search through the company’s org and send a message to anyone that’s HR or a recruiter. Include a nice, short summary of your experience with the job ID or link. Include your resume as an attachment. I literally got 4 interviews this way in a month. Which isn’t a lot but compared to 100+ rejections and in this market, I’ll take it as a win. I obviously didn’t invent this, it’s super cliche and it’s what everyone says to do but I never bothered cause I was afraid of cold messaging people on LinkedIn. Now idgaf. I don’t even bother applying to positions anymore. I just reach out to people directly. With your resume, there’s no way at least one person won’t respond.
That's a great idea. I've generally just reached out to connect with them, but didn't go the extra mile like you did. Thank you. Congrats to you, and good luck!
