Product Management role at Apple

What is the product management role at Apple like? How does it differ from Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, or Google? I am looking to understand the role and culture of Apple. Do PMs lead product design or are they more focused on marketing and product strategy? Do engineering teams respect PM guidance or they ignore it and tend to go their own way? Also, how do Program Manager roles compare with Product Manager roles at Apple? Any light you can shed will be appreciated. #pm #product #productmanager #apple #amazon #microsoft #google #meta

I thought EM mostly the one driving products?

Definitely not

Meta herbalrug Dec 8, 2022

Goldman isn’t tech. I’ve worked there and I don’t think you realize how different the tech world is. EMs definitely drive a lot of product.

It is well described in “Cracking the PM Interview”, including the difference between roles and politics.

Apple doesn’t have true product managers. Their product managers are more like program managers focused on feature development and execution process. There is little to no strategy work, as big ideas come from senior leadership.

I’ve read in other blind posts that aiml pms get to do real product work. Is that untrue

Meta illu5ionz Dec 8, 2022

Largely agree with Amazon above. I was at Apple for 10 years and their PM isn’t the traditional PM I see now at Meta and other companies. At Apple, senior leadership across Eng, Ops, and Marketing make all the decisions for product features/strategy. PMs and EPMs play a narrow role depending on their area like they might provide the schedule analysis, cost impact, etc. that gets rolled up the leaders. Marketing has a much broader role at Apple that covers a lot of the typical PM work
