After several years as product manager at Amazon and Google, I really want to move forward into a leadership position as VP/Chief product in a small medium startup. Pros: - learn new things - collaborate with leadership more closely Cons: - TC (360K) will likely go down? - never been a hiring manager Thoughts? is that a good career move or I should stay at google longer?
Speaking from the bottom of the ladder, but I read your words "I really want.." To me that says enough. You also listed 'learning' as a Pro. You only have one life. You're already doing well; you've made the sacrifices to climb the ladder. At this point, choose whichever will be 'fun'.
While I wouldn’t discourage, taking up leadership positions at startups come with massive amounts of risks and lots of scrutiny. Since you have not been a hiring manager before I’d spend time to learn the art of hiring and managing people. Maybe try that at Google even if it’s indirectly ?
Agreed .
I’m 3-4 years away of that at Google as most people start hiring at level 7 and I’m level 5. I’ve interviewed more than 200 product managers so far and so I know something about hiring. Managing/leading however is a different game.
"Likely" go down? 😉
What's your level?
