I'm interviewing with Google and was asked for contacts of professional references. I haven't told my current manager I'm switching company. Actually I'm not switching without an offer. So I don't want to risk being fired without any offers at hand. If I put my current manager as the contact, they will probably reach out to him before any potential offer is made. Then my manager would know I'm leaving and I would be at his mercy not to be fired. I don't want to put myself in that situation. But wouldn't it a bit weird not to put my current manager in the list? What would be the best strategy for this? Thanks for any input.

You can even leave it blank. Tell your recruiter that you will provide the names after your interview.

I typically use managers from previous roles and trusted colleges from my current role.
Does it have to be managers? When I left the previous team, the manager was unhappy with my decision since I was a key player. Can I list previous colleges instead that I know won't leak the info to my current manager?
First - nobody ever expects a reference from your current manager :) Of course you can use colleagues as well. A more senior colleague can be beneficial in that situation as they may have more credibility.
external refs aren't contacted until the absolute final approval, if they are contacted at all
what makes you say that? Maybe @ Oracle they're sent out early. literally have never in 100s of cases seen ext refs sent until just before final approval. If it's a clear case they might not even be sent at all.
Perhaps your references had something to do with the rejection.
internal refs (current Googlers) and external refs are 2 diff things. OP was asking about external. Internal refs ARE asked early on, before intv.. External are asked later (if at all).
I was invited for a phone screening and the recruiter's boiler plate email asks for internal refs. Is that important? I don't really have any.

UPDATE: I left it blank in the application form and told the recruiter to provide the information later. They said OK and never followed up on this topic. I got an offer in the end.
Offer as in final approval? I am in the same boat as you. Recruiter told me that hc approve the hire, but I don't feel anything is ever final until I sign the docs
Also op... How was the team matching process going on for you? I assume that you're in kirkland/Fremont? Any insight on the teams?
Uh don't put your current manager. Get a past manager.
