Tech companies to avoid as a white guy?
Graduated from UC Berkeley with EECS and have had a career at Accenture (4 years), Ooyala (startup, acquired, 4 years), Fitbit (2 years) and now at another startup related to health and clothing, but not totally satisfied after 6 months. I'm not totally convinced startup life is for me, but I'm not sure what I can pursue next. I'm several years out of coding and program/project management even with agile seems to be a grind and just doesn't seem the most ideal fit for me. It all ends up being figuring out the best way to let leadership know they're not being total jackasses... For program/project management in tech, what's a good next step? Back to corporate, or...? Does anyone want to hear the truth or are they just looking for confirmation they aren't being idiots? I'm looking for some stability in life and something that's interesting...
PM is one of the highest paying job for the least effort. You just celebrate things, traffic emails and have fun. It is basically free money.
I just switched from PgM to Product Manager. My spouse is EECS Cal too and he was contemplating TPgM role from FAANG a few years back and glad that he didnāt take that route. Personally, unless you are thinking to retire in a few years, I donāt recommend TPgM route. I feel like the organization is getting flatter and if AI continues its trajectory, I feel TPgM can be automated or reduced and itās definitely not interesting. Itās good for someone who loves consistency and predictability. There are some very good TPgM but sadly we are often lumped with others whose job is to check off something and call meetings to go through status. Product Manager, Product Designer, ML AI roles (scientist, engineer), Analytics (Insights)...I think there are a lot to consider depending on your interests.
Dear fellow (younger than me) Cal EECS grad, you probably know by now that a stable job and an interesting job are usually diametrically opposed to each other. Which do you crave more? Coming from a PgM role, would you want to make a jump to Product Management? It would likely be more interesting, however you would still be on the hook to assuage the egos of your engineering team and upper management. Most people would rather hear their views being validated, not challenged, even if it is the truth. This will never change. Also, picking a large corp that could provide the stability you crave may prove difficult. Obviously don't go into a large hardware company. Look at the crazy consolidation that's happened in the past few years. I've picked a bad rock to make my stand on as a HW PM and am contemplating jumping ship to SW even though I'm even further removed from engineering dev work than you are. Perhaps G and maybe F in the FANG could meet your criteria. Good luck friend!
