I’m a PM in the advertising industry. Long story short I applied for a senior level position and have been offered a lateral level position that pays around $25K more in salary at a much larger company which would give me my first 6-figure job. I was aiming to leave my current position which I’ve been in for roughly 4 months for a higher level position due to the knowledge and experience I have in the industry. The reasoning I was given for the change from application to offer was fairly weak and the hiring manager was unable to give me specifics on the company’s reasoning. Benefits are comparable and health insurance is much more affordable at the new company. Does making a lateral move for a company with more $ and more name recognition make sense, or does hopping so soon for a similar job title hurt me in the long run? #advertising #projectmanager #joboffer #career
Can I have your job at M+A if you leave?
Is M+A good?
Tell your current employer about your offer. If they don’t counter they lose out
That’s a mistake. If they counter they’ll make OPs life miserable after that. OP, don’t do that.
Don't ask for a counter. Don't take a counter.
I’ve been in adtech for 4 years and am probably heading out of agency soon. From what I’ve learned, titles mean nothing from an experience standpoint. Bigger company = bigger resume builder, not to mention networking. FWIW I left an ad job after a month and got a 25% bump. Second hop (after 1.5 years) was a later move and a 25% bump. TC for my area is low relative to the market. My current role (after promotion 6 months ago) is the same title as my second job, but my salary is much higher (+70% from second role). Depending on your goals, a counteroffer might not matter if you’re already ready to move on. Chase the bag bc no one else has your back. Good luck!! 🍀
Move on! Take the new gig
Definitely change over to a bigger name company: brand recognition counts more than the titles. But definitely see if your current company will counter with more pay if you think they'd give you that bump to keep you.
With only that to go on, switching jobs does not seem compelling.
Take the money. Don’t give your current job a chance to counter offer. If they under valued you by 25k it’s not a place you want to be, and if they decide to cut costs you will be the first to go.
Move on. 4 months is nothing in your cv on a long term
I guess you can try to negotiate more comp since you were anticipating a title/responsibility increase but they're not giving you one? Or maybe ask for a bigger signing bonus or something else to make up for it. Seems like they really want you.
Get that bag.
