Question.. on average, how long does it take to see a promotion at Microsoft? What’s a realistic timeline to go from 63 to 64 and then hit 65? Assuming you come in at 63. Isn’t 65 principal? Thanks in advance! #career
If you are on fast track you can get to 65 in 3 years. 1 year to 64 and 2 years to 65 else it can take for ever.
What about 62 to 63 in fast track? I was interviewed for 63 and gave 62 position
2 years from 63 to 64. 65 can never happen but it usually takes 2-3 years when it does.
What are some reasons why it could never happen? What level do folks have direct reports? I currently have a bunch and believe I’m giving that up by coming to msft. So the intent is to get to that point again quickly.
64 is a terminal level at Microsoft. You have to do something special and really want it to get to 65. Levels are a different concept than the track you take at Microsoft (I/C vs Manager). You can ask to be a made a manager starting L63. Most managers are at least L64 though and it’s quite competitive to become one since so many people want it.
