Does previous work experience matter when someone is put up for promotions? I noticed some people with previous work experience get promoted faster than others. It could be they ramp up faster and deliver more, but just curious does it matter directly in promos? Context - talking about an SDE 1 to 2 promotion
If it's a fast promo, like <1yr, I've only seen it happen for downleveled industry hires. But it's mostly based on how you perform.
I very much doubt this. Promotions depend on showing impact and delivering value to the business of the *current* employer. Switching externally almost always resets your promotion clock. You should never rely on faster promos based on your previous experience. This is true atleast for SDE-1 to SDE-2.

It could, because promotion in most big tech companies isn’t so much about internal achievements, but about whether you have the skills/experience of the next level
