I’ve almost 5 years of experience at Microsoft. I got an admit from Georgia Tech for masters in CS. The market is tough now. Is it worth the shot now? My main motivation is to upskill, get an international experience and see the other side of the world. While I’m fine to come back to my home if things don’t work well, I want to make an informed decision before I spend both time and money. Moreover for the past 1-2 years I think I’m being in my comfort zone and becoming very lazy everyday. I’m not feeling excited anymore. Sure I could change teams or switch to another company but I want to give Masters a shot. What would be your advice and why? (Of course I want to learn, work on some impactful projects on AI and earn well. I definitely want to be back to my home country in 3-5 years. I want my kids to be born and raised in India. I know lot of peeps say this so please let’s not get into that discussion) Edit1: I see some folks are suggesting to try switch internally to US. I tried and am actively applying. Seems like relocation and visa budgets are cut. Some of the managers who are interested in my profile asked to get back later as there is no budget now. Blind tax: L62, E+D IDC CTC: Base 33LPA + bonus and stocks as per level 😢 #tech #masters #software
Can’t you internal transfer to US?
It seems like there’s no relocation budget now
Masters won't help you as much as you think. Better to move through company as you're already 62. No point in spending money when you can let Microsoft pay for your travel, relocation and then change to a better company in US
Masters doesn’t make sense at all. Change to US team if you wanna live there for few years and find a project/team that aligns with your interest
Can't you just get an L1 once you hit 7 years at MS. My friend did that and moved to Seattle. Masters was great for me because my UG and exp wasn't particularly great but You are already at Microsoft. Do a PhD if you're really serious about learning something. Don't expect MS to radically upskill you, maybe fun if you're burnt out but probably spending too much money for it and the market is pretty bleak
Do what you like but realise that a masters won't help your career, when you already have 6 YoE.
People who vote want to see your downfall. People who comment want to see you succeed.
I would extremely highly recommend you go to MS. Georgia Tech is a wonderful school for CS! Nothing beats getting yourself upskilled! It will be with you for life. And coming to the US for school (vs straight for work) enables you with exposure to learn many more things on a personal and professional front. When you are at work, people get tunnel visioned. But school gives you exposure to learn much more across topics and subjects and makes you well rounded. You have a very good professional experience being at MSFT so you won’t have challenges finding a job after MS. People who suggest otherwise are being short sighted
"upskilled" nice try nvidia. In this age all upskilling can be done at home. No need to pay 60k$ for a certificate
Don't count on getting a Master's degree in the US as your ticket to a long term visa in the US. Personally, I would not give up a job at Microsoft to pursue a US Master's. Keep pursuing an L1 transfer and get your Master's through a part time program at a local university or through an online program.
Dont fall in trap of Masters. You’ll spend 2 years + lot of money in it. Also considering your experience at Microsoft, If you choose general computer science, you’ll hardly learn anything new. It is a different case if you are considering doing Matsers in something different than domain you are currently working or a certain specialization. If that is the case You can go for it. Work for 3 years after masters and then consider moving back. You ll have shiny university and Microsoft tags but yes everything depends on job market. But let me tell you it is not going to be easy escaping from comfy job to switch to academics and run a rat race again.

How many books do you usually read in a year?
Why would you want to spend 2 years and 1Cr when you could get an internal tranfer by just changing teams?
I tried but seems like relocation and visa budgets are cut. Even though few of the managers showed interest in my profile they asked me to get back later as there is no budget for that now :(
