Qualcomm Self driving chip design versus Microsoft Azure DL accelerator design
I have comparable offers from both. Please advise which position is better from future career point of view.
You should be able to earn more at Microsoft, particularly if you'll be based in WA, and take advantage of their better benefit package.
I am thinking more about career longevity. People retire at Qualcomm because there is always the next modem to design though I suspect that may end in next 4 years. Qualcomm is new to ADAS so success there is still uncertain. Not sure how Microsoft Azure HW is with job stability compared to Qualcomm HW.
I think that both teams will be as stable as each other in the near term, but Microsoft is still the better choice because Qualcomm simply doesn't have the margin to pay high salaries. Microsoft does as it's cloud business is a money printing machine. Also, I wouldn't be looking at which company you can retire at. Your career will stagnate if you do that.
From some other threads on blind, seems HW engineers in msft don't get special stock awards unlike software engineers. Essentially it seems like hardware engineers are second class citizens in msft, while the reverse is true at qcom. Maybe msft folks can comment more as to wether this is just hearsay.
Also, mind sharing yoe/tc?
