Currently working in a customer engineering role in Microchip. looking for a change Offer 1: Qualcomm Customer Engineering, San Diego 98k base 40k rsu 25k signon, position is very similar to what I am doing now Offer 2: Microchip internal team library dev team 72k base, will promote to senior engineer in 1 year, no relocation, a lot of learning since team is fast paced and challenging Salary in hand will be very much comparable except for signon and rsu What should I choose? How easy is it to move internally in Qualcomm? What is the annual increment in salaries for Customer Engineering role?
Choose a Dev role instead of CE role at Qcom. That will be better for your caree
Pros and cons of CE role?
Pros High visibility Chill wlb Cons Not hands on technical You would never write code (no hands on) Play second fiddle to devs It is not a dev job. Earlier modem CEs simply used to forward the customer issues directly to dev team . When the layoff happened, half of CE guys got laid off. So now there has been a focus on atleast trying to “analyse” an issue before asking dev teams help. Regardless , it is not a SW dev role, so youll always get pingeongoled i Test domains
No microchip..
You mean no microchip or stay in microchip?
Considering the difference in cost of living you will not save considerably more in San Diego with this QCom offer I think. You can push for salary hike in Mchp instead. Does Qcom give evergreen RSUs like mchp does or 40k is just a one time?
I am not aware of that.
I think it’s like RSU given at the start.
What customers and products are you supporting at Qualcomm .The reason I am asking is because if you are supporting advanced products , moving to a 8 bit controller product would be moving backward from a future opportunity perspective.
Don't listen to the empty promise of promotion. Pay raise is all that matters. If they really want to retain you, they can offer you a pay raise that matches QCOM's offer right away.

Not difficult to move around if you give 2 years and have a supportive manager. What kind of library dev are you doing in MC?
IoT Wireless modules. It’s expanding into other new libraries for 8-bit microcontrollers.
