Im wondering if I should make the change to quant dev. Im currently a builder (not swe) and was considering making the change internally. With the layoffs and potentially more to come I came across quant dev which looks interesting. Not particularly interested in finance. I am vey young in my career so I am wondering if it’s a good move in the long term. Can I come back to pure-tech from quant dev? 2 YoE TC 120k

“Not particularly interested in finance.” Then absolutely not.
If it’s technically challenging does context matter? Let me rephrase the above statement: “I enjoy whatever field to the extend that it gives me a problem to solve and develop my skills”
From a pure engineering perspective I don’t think context generally matters. But the vast majority of money people in the finance world would readily disagree with me there and as a quant dev you will be expected to show keen interest and absorb a lot of finance knowledge. If you’re not into it I don’t think you’re going to have a good time.
